Wondering if anyone knows who makes the lightest 4 point instep crampon. (Want something to carry along as a “just in case” when backpacking to climb high peaks that may or may not have snow/ice.) I found a Stubai 4 point crampon at 320 grams (11.3 oz). Anything lighter out there? Or any alternative to acheive the same thing?

How about a 6 point instep crampon for as little as 7 oz.?

Some people use the very minimalistic YaKtrak cable “crampons” which weigh even less— I wouldn’t use these for anything approaching even easy mtneering but some people like these for icy trails.

I’ve used the Ice Walker 4-point instep crampon for several years. They’re available in two favors: one with neoprene straps and one with webbing-type straps (with side-release buckles).

The neoprene version weighs 4.5 oz and the webbing version 3.5 oz. I would not recommend the webbing version, however, since they tend to loosen very quickly. The neoprene version, once properly adjusted, stays securely in place much longer (I generally use them with running shoes). Also, rather than wearing them on the instep, I find they’re more effective when worn under the ball of the foot.

Ice Walkers are great for “just in case” backpacking use where they can, for example, significantly improve traction when crossing the occasional snow field. I sometimes even wear two pair, with the second attached under the heels of my shoes.

They’re only moderately durable, however, so they’ll require frequent sharpening if used for extended periods.

I have used the Crab’s, CMI, and the Camp instep crampons. At 7oz, the Camp crampons are much better (IMHO)

I realize the site says “6 points” but Im wondering who actually did the counting on this?

2 on the inside of the foot, and 2 on the outside of the foot (4 total), 2 on the front and another 2 on the back (another 4 total).

Isnt that 8?

Thanks everyone for your input. Looks like I should be able to get something that is about half the weight of what I had found!

So…who did the counting at ULA in regard to the Axis Crampons points? Well…that would be me. I counted 8 but have obviously typed 6 on my website. Thanks for the heads up. Gotta start doing those web updates a little earlier in the day before one side of my brain falls asleep. 8 it is.
