I will soon be leaving for a 1,5 year long outdoor trip. Being an UL I will not carry books, but will use my cell phone as a digital camera and MP3 player. I stored all reading material as books on tape, music and Garmin maps on 6 micro SD cards and use them as a back up for my photos as well.

Now my question is: How do I store all these micro SD cards safely while hiking?

I do not want to carry all the 6 plastic containers in which they came in. I am considering putting them all in one plastic container, but this way they could still move around in the container and I am worried that this could damage them.

Any input?

Christine

If they will all fit, I would put them all inside the little plastic storage box, but use a bit of thin cardboard to separate them. You could cut the pieces before your trip and see if they will all fit (with the cardboard).

These cards are actually surprisingly tough. Really you can keep these in just about anything you wont loose.

A bit of moisture wont hurt them, but loading them into a device if they're soaked isn't a good idea. If you have any type of waterproof money/document/id type holder, like one of those clear ultra-heavy zip-loc type deals, that would work just fine. Otherwise, maybe make a small sil-nylon bag for them..

BTW, unlike regular SD cards and other larger form factor memory cards, most micro sd cards actually have the plastic fused or cast around the memory chips inside.. i.e. they dont have seams, and they don't come apart.

Due to the small size, you'd have to generally have to be intentionally trying to break these things.

I abuse the crap out of dozens of these things, and have never had one break, under any type of circumstances.

Hi Christine

I would reconsider. The little plastic holders are very light and you KNOW the cards will be safe when stored in them. What are the alternatives anyhow – in weight terms?
Yes, I carry my spare memory cards (for camera) each in its own little box.

I just came back from a 7-month RTW trip (including 3 months in China), carrying 4 SD cards together inside one tiny plastic bag — like one of these without any problems.

One unsolicited advice: if inserting card into internet cafe or hostel PC’s — make sure you ‘lock’ your card first — to prevent virus infection.

I've put a few through the washing machine (don't ask) dried them out and they have worked fine – photos all still retrievable. Probably don't store them in the pockets of your pants, but they are a bit more durable than I would think.

Thanks for all the info! It became very apparent for me, that these cards are much tougher than I expected.
I will store all 6 of them in a little plastic container as I have realised now that moving around will not damage them.
Thanks for all the input!
Christine
