Looking for a belay jacket with synthetic filling, I headed down to my local Arc'teryx shop to check out their offerings.

The reason I go with Arc'teryx over other brands despite being they're being expensive is that I have a reasonably slim/athletic build, and no other brand seems to have the long sleeve lengths I require. I've been quite happy with Arc'teryx stuff.

Until this weekend.

I tried the Solo Jacket, size medium. Sleeves much to short. I go up to a size large. Sleeves just fine, but the chest part is so tented, the insulating quality of the jacket is lost. Checked the label. Made in Canada. Hmmm…

So, in effect, it appears that Arc'teryx has adopted Mountain Hardwear's sizing standards. Argh!

Has anyone else had similar experiences with Arc'teryx stuff as of late?

I wouldn't despair so quickly. You're basing this on one jacket. It's probably just the cut of that particular garment.

My general impression of the current Arcteryx stuff is that it runs large and baggy. I'm basing this off of their hardshells. I wear a medium in every company, but a small in Arcteryx. The shells have LOTS of roominess in the body and arms, it's good for layers.

This would be sad for me if true. Arc stuff fits my tall lanky build perfectly. We don't need another Mountain Hardwear.

Dan,

I hope you're right (that it's just that one garment).

I posted the thread to see if others were having the same experiences with this season's Arc'teryx gear…

I have bugged the "dead bird" people at head office here in Vancouver off and on for years to make clothing that would fit bigger, heavy chested people. Their products have fitted the slender, runner types well, but, guys like me with bull necks and big shoulders/chests are out of luck.

I need a softshell or two and always buy Canadian and this might just be what I have wsanted, as Westcomb is not making what I want in sizes.

Considering the Arcteryx is owned by Amer Sports, it's kind of a Finnish company. Sure, a small bit of their stuff is still made in Canada, but most of it is made in China. Not really Canadian anymore.

If you contact Arctetyx by email, they will gladly provide info on which items are a slim fit and which are cut fuller.

Synthetic belay type jackets tend to be very roomy regardless of brand. Makes sense to some extent.
