Dec 10, 2009 at 5:07 am #1552232Sounds like Event will still exist but under different names, according to the analysis of the Editor of Trailspace.
How will we know what is really Event though and what is just 'Event-like.'
Perhaps this means we can look forward to Event gear going on closeout in the near future and get some deals.
Dec 10, 2009 at 5:36 am #1552236I'm hoping that it won't be too long before we see Rockywoods with yardage that says "Made by GE textiles, makers of eVent". Finally we will be able to buy the fabric for MYOG projects.
I still don't understand how eVent seemingly matches the concept of first-generation Gore Tex without its achilles heel. (And why Gore didn't figure it out first)
Dec 10, 2009 at 8:02 pm #1552576The difference is that advances in material science made it possible to make the membrane oil hating so it doesn't get gonked up and is easier to wash clean. Why gore-tex didn't get their first? Most likely they were focused on other things.

Dec 10, 2009 at 9:41 pm #1552599My understanding…
Event did away with the PU coating that Goretex products have. Gore, refused to do this because they think that the PU coating is important for performance, long term durability, protecting the coating from body oils etc

And to cycle back to Verber's comment, eVent were able to get rid of the PU layer because their PFTE membrane is oleophobic, ie it repels oil, so it doesn't get contaminated and doesn't need the PU layer to protect it.

If you are out there….do you have any news about eVent availability or name change?
Figure, if there was an expert on fabric and their availability, it would be Ron.

Dec 11, 2009 at 1:53 pm #1552820l only know what I see online at the various links posted.
Looks like they are only opening the brand name for individual companies to spec various other fabrics, etc to be bonded to the base eVENT and then brand the end material the themselves. Also to rebrand the existing eVENT fabrics we all know as as another name if they choose.
No change to the core eVENT technology and availability.
What could this mean to you: Some company would make a product and call the fabrics " SupernoH2OStuff"- make WPB claims that look exactly .0001% better than eVENT and it would be eEVNT but you would be confused….
I would guess that most companies will not rebrand the eVENT name since it is so successful as a brand already based on the superior performance. But- if they spec something wacky that may not perform maybe GE would make it but not let them use the eEVNT name
So, not much to worry about.
We use regular old great eVENT- It is interesting that the other company that rhymes with "BoreFlex" is spending so much marketing money flying bloggers/outdoor writers to the BF plant to brand against eVENT :-)
Dec 11, 2009 at 2:50 pm #1552834Yeah, we dont need any more rebranding of fabric, do we?
Dec 12, 2009 at 2:23 am #1552975> eVent were able to get rid of the PU layer because their PFTE membrane is oleophobic, ie it repels oil,
That's the bit which still puzzles me. Just how can you alter a PTFE surface to be oleophobic? Assuming it remains PTFE of course.Cheers
