Did anyone notice the Potable Aqua chlorine dioxide tablets in the new gear section? Looks like Katadyn Micropur and Aqua Mira have made the dent in their market.

Does anyone know why there is such a big difference in the recommendations between Katadyn, Potable Aqua, Klearwater and Aqua Mira for treatment times? 4 hours is a long time!

Dale, Ignoring the iodine products in the catalog which, especially in the presence of microbe shielding biofilms (according to DrJ), aren’t as effective for as wide a range of microbes as chlorine dioxide, the other products are all forms of chlorine dioxide and should be relatively similar in treatment times. The MP1 webpage gives the clearest explanation of how long various types of microbes require exposure to the chemical to achieve the desired effect. Those times should be applicable to the other products given similar dosing levels producing the same levels of chlorine dioxide in the treated water.

    That makes more sense:
For handling cysts the chart reads:
30 minutes for clear water @68F/20C and 4 hours for “dirty” water @39F/4C.

That brings up another question. Temperature makes a difference in effectiveness and UV is destructive. I’m usually taking water from glacier-fed sources and it’s *cold* water year-round. It sounds like some sort of dark bag would be helpful with a Platypus or other clear bladder and cold water. I imagine a black stuff sack would warm things up enough. Sound thinking?

Giardia cysts are what I’m trying to protect against. Sounds like a spare bladder is a good idea for times when there isn’t an opportunity to warm things up at bit.

Dale, IF you’re ONLY concerned about Giardia, one of those plastic water bottles with a 2micron (that’s 2.0 microns, NOT 0.2microns) cyst filter should be fine. In fact, Aqua Mira makes a relatively inexpensive one (~24oz) just for that purpose. Others make similar ones also. You could collect the water in a Big-Zip (no hose), also fill the water bottle with cyst filter and then re-fill the water bottle from the Big-Zip as necessary.

Alternatively, you could try the Seychelle filter which is really only a cyst filter anyways, as an in-line filter in the hose of Platy-Hoser system.

Just some options IF Giardia is your ONLY concern.

    Hello Dale Wambah.
The answer to your question is pretty simple. They contain different strengths of NaClO2 (sodium chlorite) the percurser for chlorine dioxide. So bearing that in mind and the NaClO2 is held in buffers above a ph10. Add equal of HCL as NaClO2, you drop its ph to 2 and you produce 100% of the available ClO2, add liquid citric (50%) at 1:5 of NaClo2 and ph drops to 3.2 relasing 20% of ClO2 and rest as chlorous acid residuale. This same percurser is the mouthwash sold by dentists, profresh, neways, therabreath etc, pet odor eliminater etc etc etc.
