How’s it going guys,

I decided to post some setup pictures and initial thoughts of the new SMD Gatewood Cape in the ‘Photo Gallery’ forum. I hate to eat up bandwidth, but since this is the first full coverage shelter/poncho on the market (at least as far as I know), I thought some pictures would be helpful. If you have any questions, you can post them here, or on the picture page in the Gallery. Thanks again,

-Dave:)

the gatewood cape seems great to me as a shelter. but i have the same problem with it that i have with all ponchos as raingear — they’re way too hot and it’s clumsy walking with them. how do you poncho/tarp users cope with the poncho as raingear?

How to cope:
1) Throw it back over shoulder, Clint Eastwood style and squint. That’s way cool.
2) Use W/B fabric, including Tyvek. Ponchos and capes like to breath, too.
3) Vent judiciously (sp? why isn’t phonetics spelled fonetically?)
4) Use a hat instead of the hood (dump lots of heat that way).

Clumsy walking? I dunno. How would I notice? I’m clumsy to start with.

All in all, after surviving the AT on ’03, the wettest year on record, where the ridge-top trails were ankle deep in water, I’m a firm poncho convert. I like capes better than ponchos, though. They fit closer and are easier to move in.
