Bay area BPL anything in December?

I'm considering something in the Pinecrest area. I'm looking for a short snowshoe walk into a campground. Maybe Herring Creek Reservoir, but that might be a 6-7 mile walk.

no bites? Second weekend in December?

I'm up for a trip still…next weekend (12/5) would be best for me.

I'd like to get into the Pinecrest area and try out the cold. Should be a good chance to do that, there's not much snow yet.

The weather looks like it should be good through next weekend.

Anybody else interested?

David, I am hearing that the weather might be changing for the weekend. I'd be down but I have football to watch. Jan.-March I am wide open. I still have to get your stuff back to you. Do you want me to mail it to you????

I'm doing a trip next weekend. Not sure what or where. I'd be open to joining ya'll. I took the time off, hoping to backcountry ski, but that's looking slim. Any ideas on something fun in the mountains? Anyone want to climb a peak?

Katharina, don't know if my wife and I can do an overnight in December, but any interest in a full day Big Basin adventure?

We'll be at Point Reyes in January. Will you be there?

Also may join a winter trip in February, if it doesn't interfere with winter trips we're planning and a Wilderness First Aid course we're taking in early February.

Big Basin is very nice. If no overnight trip comes together, I'd be up for that. I will be at Point Reyes and also at February trip. Will be nice to meet you.

I am getting the feeling that " Backpacking Light" is more for shopping, comparing/bragging than for people who actually go out and enjoy nature.
Or maybe its just me.

I'm not about to suggest you'll be safer at home. I'm not about to dissuade a woman from traveling alone. I think you face the same laws of risk such as risk assessment, common sense, and experience while crossing a busy street as you do on a trail.

And I understand it's not the same for women as it is for men, alone. But you know that too, and it affects your common sense decisions. I'm most impressed by women who realize this and are out there enjoying their right to the same solitude and adventure that we all appreciate.

I'm not sure I should list guidelines or concerns from my perspective, but I guess if I was concerned about being a target of demented humans I would: choose an area more heavily traffic'd; select a trail with options to confuse a stalker; camp amongst others or in a large area; carry bear spray and use it if aggressed.

Regarding the inherent dangers of the wilderness, I think you should know and trust your abilities and experience, and stick close to those. Maybe solo is not the time to test gear strategies, push the weather, and check out new trails. Go enjoy somewhere familiar with warm gear and a solid tent on a beautiful weekend… like this one.

Or wait until you feel confident and safest, however that finds you.

Actually some, like me, work a great deal and can only spen a certain amount of time out playing. Some of us own homes, have careers and families so we are limited in choice like myself. As you will see, on this board, there are many here have a great deal of experience from YEARS of being in the backcountry.

As time goes by you will see that those here that do Bay Area trips pick and choose what interests them. Me? I have set up most of the trips that we have done and the group changes dramatically from trip to trip.

We have Point Reyes in January which Ken (from Humboldt)and myself put together. And so far a winter camping trip most likely in Feb. After that, there will be something in March…possibly another snow trip and then Rancheria Falls in Yosemite in or around April-May. After that, most of us (and myself included) offer up ideas for trips for the summer. Those trips can last from 3-6 days depending on what the plan is. Some of us use vaction time to do these trips and are limited on what they can pick or choose.

As for comparing and buying gear? Me? I have not bought anything since last summer. Too busy trying to stay afloat and have a nice house. I have enough gear. See you in Jan. at Point Reyes

As I recall you have some family in the Fresno area. Are you going to be in the area at some point for the holidays? If so, I can meet you to pick up the goods and enjoy a holiday beer if you have time. My family is Fresno.

I was watching this post with interest, keeping an eye on the weather forecast and considering an outing in Emigrant this weekend. Unfortunately, I ended up having to attend my cousins wedding instead. Keep suggesting outings and I can assure you myself and other will meet up, although it may be a little harder to get a group together in the winter.

Regarding the exchange above, I can attest that Ken is a gentleman and genuinely nice guy. I do not believe he meant to offend in anyway. I hope we can all get together at Point Reyes and share some wine around the fire.

Thanks Dave, all is good. Point Reyes will be quite fun. Hope that there is good weather or at least as good as we had it last year. Christmas is at my house so I will not be heading up to the Fresno area. Jan. is next month and before you know it you will have your sig bottle and hat back!!!
