I was in Ace Hardware the other day and saw these unusually large white painted nails that looked long enough to use as stakes for holding down a tarp. When I picked up one, I was amazed as how ultra light it felt and when I saw the price, 29 cents per nail, I bought a bunch of them.

These ultralight, ultracheap nails are known as "gutter spikes" or "gutter nails" and I think they will work great. I would imagine these are sold at most hardware stores and probably at Home Depot and Lowes.

I have been shopping around for lightweight stakes and I am very happy that I got these. I recommend trying these out.

I think that I will be checking these out at my local Ace Hardware. I think I can spare 2 dollars for ultralight stakes!

Thank you for the tip!

Mine are about 7" long and weigh 13g each. For comparison I have some blue Easton 6" tent stakes that weigh 10g each but cost $2.25-$2.50 a piece.

They are aluminum and bend easily, but in soft soil will work.

In my earlier days of backpacking (when I was a poor beginning teacher) I used aluminum gutterspikes for several years. Worked well and I just tossed the bent ones when I returned home. Got 'em fer free B/C I was in roofing in the summers back in the late 60s, early 70s.

Now I pony up and buy MSR's "most excellent" 'GROUNDHOG' Y-cross section aluminum tent stakes. VERY tough and, best of all, they hold well in soft soil.
