I there any reason you can't throw one of these in your bag at night?

They are not very warm and they don't last that long. If you stick them to the top of your socks they will certainly feel warm when on. The larger ones, the handwarmers or even the bigger ones, would be better at warming the bottom of bag, and may last most of the night (some handwarmers seem to work great, running hot and lasting for hours, others from the same box seem to be not so warm and run out quickly, so there is a quality control problem).
I think having some for emergencies make sense in the winter, particularly for hands.
