Hello everyone. I'm starting to plan my thru hike of the Colorado Trail next summer. I'm trying to decide what to buy for my core equipment

Here are my main 4:

Western Mountaineering Summerlite bag
6 foot model-1 lb 3oz
(I need a sleeping bag with a full zip and this seems to fit the bill. I'm not ready for the quilt yet.)

Tarp Tent Contrail
1 lb 8.5oz
(either this or the Fly Creek UL from BA. I need a tent, no tarp for me.)

Thermarest NeoAir
Size Reg-14oz
(I can do the ridge rest but I sleep so much better on an air mat. I want to be hiking as much as possible, sun up to sun down, so I want to be rested.)

GoLite Jam Pack
Size Large-1 lb 10oz (i emailed golite to see what the weight for the large is)
(I'm unsure on what to chose for a pack. I want some sort of "frame" and I want a waist belt and padded shoulder straps.)

Not sure on your price point, but if you want a frame (rather than a virtual one) consider either the ULA Equipment OHM, which is actually lighter than the Jam or the Gossamer Gear Gorilla, which is also lighter but I do believe smaller as well. There is a great thread following the recent review of the Gorilla on BPL.

Looks like some excellent choices. You might add the ULA Ohm and Gossamer Gear Gorilla as a pack choices. All should handle that one long stretch between resupplies well.

OK, David, I stopped to sip my coffee before hitting send.

I will check out the ULA.

Don't all GG packs have you stuff clothes in the shoulder straps for padding?

"OK, David, I stopped to sip my coffee before hitting send."

;)

Regarding stuffing the shoulder straps – that is an option but I believe the Gorilla comes shipped with padded foam.

I agree, excellent choices. Another pack choice I would consider is the MLD Exodus. More room than the Jam and 10 oz. lighter. I have both and much prefer the exodus. I use four sections of z-lite as a frame for the pack and then use the z-lite under my legs and feet at night combined with a small NeoAir.

If you still decide to buy the Jam, Campsaver.com has them in stock at a 20% discount when you sign up for the mailing list.

Thanks for turning me on to MLD. They have some good stuff. I worry about not having more than pad as the frame.

It is endorsed by Lint. I saw him talk at REI once. He is pretty hardcore.

You might want consider buying both a pack with a frame and a frameless. Try them both out on a couple of weekend trips and then return the one you don't want. If for some reason you can't return it you can sell it in the gear swap.

++1 for the OHM
