Well, I've got a problem. As the weather turns cold in the Midwest, it seems that my feet have adjusted (in a bad way) since last winter. I usually wear cotton socks for daily use (not hiking/camping) but it seems that my feet are constantly cold. They sweat a little, then get chilled and can't warm up.

So, my question is, what would a good everyday sock be to cure this problem? I need something durable, as I wont always be using them with a shoe.

I figure there's got to be a popular hiking fabric that would be perfect for this.

Thanks!

MN guy here. I wear Smartwools (adrenaline mini crews) every day. All year long. Sometimes when the weather is cold, I move to expedition (heavy cushioning). They're fantastic.

Wool for the win.

Hi,

Costco has some nice cheap merino socks. They work really well.

I'm in Texas, and I wear expedition wool socks year-round. Not for the warmth, but for the comfort and smell (or lack thereof). When wearing cotton socks, my feet would sweat, and the shoes quickly became 'objectionable' for taking off in public. Since switching to wool, I've found that I can wear the same pair for several days without laundering, my feet rarely sweat (certainly not as much as with cotton), and my feet and shoes remain….sociable?

Smartwools for me. I wear them until they're crazy threadbare ($$$) but I never wear anything else but wool or thin coolmax style in the summer. All winter I live in my Smartwools. Darn toughs are great too. They aren't hole proof (unfortunately) but they're replaced every pair I ever holed without question which is nice…

I use REI merino wool socks for backpacking, with sandals, and sometimes wear them to work. About $6-7 cheaper than smartwool, seem to be about the same sock.

I'll second the motion about the Costco wool socks. Nice socks at a great price.

Wool will solve the problem. I prefer smooth socks like the Smartwool Adrenaline over the thicker Costco socks, but either of them will work.

I also wear Smartwool Adrenalins like everyday and they never get really smelly, I just air each pair out at the end of the day. My gf has down booties that are super warm she wears around the house. They were like $30

Columbia also make a lot of wool socks that come in two packs for $15 or less and do tend to last.
