I am looking for a shelter that is:

1. As light as possible (prefer less than 16 ozs total).

2. Roomy enough for 6' 210 lbs to change easily.

3. That room must be bug-proof at least for the buggy seasons in the SE.

4. Completely waterproof. I don't want any "misting" or other forms of water coming in. I can deal with a little condensation.

Need recommendations for total system.
I am considering the GG The One, but I think that I could go lighter in the winter when I don't need the bug protection. I could use a tarp, ground cloth, and bug shelter of some kind, but would want the bug shelter large enough to change in without getting bit.

I am also considering making my own…
What is the best place for buying a completely waterproof, very light (spinnaker, cuben, or similar?) fabric and no-see-um or nano-see-um netting?

I am 6' and weigh in at 210. I love the TarpTent Contrail. The perfect compromise between a tarp and a tent. I love the screening and the flooring. It is a little slice of heaven when the mosquitos and black flies are out. Yet only 24 OZ. However….she will mist like most single walls.

Given your spec I would suggest the one is the best choice. As others have said search past forum discussions and look at the reviews for more info. Not as light and more expensive, but more flexible would be a mld duo mid + inner bug tent.

I believe in the near future, MLD will be offering the SoloMid (spinnaker 10oz); with solo mesh inner it would be a combined 19oz…..and in non-bug weather leave the inner behind…

OK, thanks for the info guys!

I am thinking about going with a tarp or mid with a bug shelter underneath. Which combinations have you guys used and what do you recommend? Again, I need a bug shelter that I can comfortably sit up in.

Maybe the new MLD Solomid and inner net will be what I am looking for…

An MLD Grace Solo Tarp with an MLD bug bivy will weigh in at around 10 oz total if you get the tarp and bivy bottom in cuben. You can still sit up in the bug bivy as it moves with you because of the way it is designed. No misting problems with cuben either.

I too am 6' and ~210. I use an SMD Gatewood Cape with the matching NetTent also by SMD. It works real well versus bugs and such. I've experienced very little issues with water spraying in from the sides or anything of that nature.

I think I would only use my Gatewood Cape during late spring, summer, and early fall as, for my system, its only good rain protection when it is not cold.

While sitting up at our size is possible in the NetTent, the whole of your upper body will be against the mesh. I've changed clothes in my NetTent with no problems either. Though, having good core strength helps tremendously!

If I were to do it over again, I'd get the cuben monk tarp or the poncho tarp from MLD combined with their Bug Bivy. I'd certainly give the need to sit up the shuck. As a quilt user during the above 30 degree season (which is most of the time in Arkansas), the BPL or GG bug solutions are not very appropriate as they are not quite full protection.

Since snow is rare around here, the monk tarp (when I get one) with my BMW Vapr Bivy will be my winter gear.
