I know you can buy extra maps but I have heard people mention that there are free topo map files available that you can load onto this GPS. Does anybody know where to find these? Also what is the file extension?

GPS File Depot has free topo maps that are pretty accurate as well as a number of trail and other maps.

The regional topo maps by "John M" on that site cover the whole US, and come with an installer that works with the garmin utility for easy download.
They also have some street maps, but they are not routable. For free routable street maps, the routable set from this site work well:

For those looking to buy a Garmin, the HCx versions of the Legend and Vista have a separate flash memory card slot where you can add a 2GB card to download and install several states of road and topo maps at a time.
