What do you guys think is the best alcohol stove for the MSR Titan pot?

I did some testing in my kitchen tonight, boiling 5 dl of water (I think that is the same as 2 quarts ).

Here's my quick and unscientific results:

MBD Atomic with wire stand:
About 8 minutes to a rolling boil with 20ml alchohol poured into it. Kept burning another 2 minutes after I removed the pot. Very steady flame that resulted in no soot buildup on the sides of the pot and cool to the touch handles (very nice). Fast to get going. Downside: a bit messy to apply alcohol to the priming wick. I got this one today and think I will like it.

Whitebox stove (original).
Fastest boil, just 4:50 with 25ml of alchol used. It burned maybe 30 secs after I removed the pot. Been known to prime slowly, but I think it was quite fast today when I applied some alcohol to the "priming pan". Love that you don't need a wire stand or the like. Downside: flames lick the sides of the pot creating soot. A bit more fuel hungry than the others. Not as stable as a wire stand setup.

Antigravity stove from the Keg set, wire stand from MDB.
7:30 to the boil with 20ml alcohol. Kept burning 1 min after removing pot. Love the integrated priming pan. Gets going fast. Downside: flames lick the sides somewhat.

I have a feeling that the White Box will be the best choice for this pot. Need to order that one soon.

What do you guys think is the best stove for it?

Um, Titan Kettle or 2L Titan pot?

onlineconversions has 5dL as ~0.5quart, aka one pint. That sounds like a good volume for the Titan Kettle.

I swear by the Caldera Cone from Trail Designs. They made me a cone for my 2L MSR Ti pot, and I had another cone from them for me Titan kettle. (If you want one for a 2L pot, just contact them.) Very, very fuel efficient design. Also very stable, very wind resistant… all in all, an awesome stove system.

I have been fooling around with combining the MBD Atomic with the ThermoJet MicroLite. The burner that comes with the thermojet burned too hot IMO and the flames wicked up the side and burn time was not very good. The atomic works great though. Good burn time (13-14 min. on one ounce) and rolling boil for two cups in about 5 min. Very nice system and stove fits inside the pot which is a big bonus.

Brad: MSR Titan kettle 0.85l :)

Yes, I've been considering the caldera cone for it since I've already got one for the Snow Peak 900 that I'm really happy with (plus the Keg-H). Totally agree that is a great system. Only thing is that I want to order just the cone. Haven't seen that option in the shop and I didn't get an answer when I emailed them about it. Will try again.

Doh… stupid comment by me.

Thomas, cool, .85L kettle… Caldera is the way to go. Actually, I'd get the Ti-Tri. I really like the properties of the metal, in terms of malleability etc, and it gives you some fuel flexibility. (I might even try it with a liquid fuel stove this winter… shhhh!) I'm playing with the new Inferno set-up for my Ti-Tri right now, and it's a great wood-burning option. It burns much, much better and with no futzing about loading fuel as compared to my MYOG "bushbuddy."

Both Rand and Russ have been super-responsive to my emails and gear-head needs. I suspect they'll gladly work out something for you if you don't want another 12-10. Just tell them you already have two!

I'll chime in here and agree with what Brad has already said. In the past I had purchased a Caldera Kitchen set up from Trail Designs with the Evernew 900ml pot…love it. Then I started thinking about the ti-tri because of the wood burning option, and then I learned about the inferno option for the ti-tri and I became real interested. I emailed Rand and told him that I wanted to purchase a ti-tri with the inferno for my Evernew pot, explained that as I had already purchased a Caldera Kitchen previously that all I wanted was just the cone and inferno inserts and ti-stakes to support the pot in wood burning mode because I already had everything else. He emailed me back and said that he could definately make something work for me and then made a generous offer that I could not refuse. I just received my new ti-tri inferno in the mail a few days ago and have only had the opportunity to play with it once outside, but so far I am very impressed with it. Anyway the point is if you are interested in purchasing just a cone, then get in touch with the people at T.D. and I am sure they will accomodate you, some of the absolute best customer service I have experienced anywhere.

Nice, I will definitely get in contact with them again to see if I can get a ti-tri (and maybe with the inferno insert).

I guess the ti-tri is more sturdy and less prone to dents?
The cone I have for the Keg-H for instance is quite dented and it is not as easy to put it together as in the beginning.

Hello Thomas, here is a list of stoves that would do well in your cool Norwegian climate, all are one piece stoves, no additional pot stand required:

A great design here at BPL, the “SS StarLyte UltraLyte”

The most recent design. “BudLyte Super Stove”

Here is “Cobalt Blue Soloist”

Here we have the “Cobalt”

And now the Fancee Feest

All are well adapted to cold climates. Hope this helps in your decision making.

The Cobalt soloist stove looks interesting – can it be bought or is it a MYOG project?

I've been using an Evernew about the size of the Titan.
I really like the humble cat can stove.
It's not as fancy as the rest, certainly doesn't have the bling factor, and probably not as fast (though plenty fast for me).
Should cost you 59 cents to make, it serves as it's own pot support, and it's SO SIMPLE!

Craig, the SuperCat was my inspiration for all my one piece stoves. You are so right about easy to make and affordable. The Fancee Feest stove is made with the 3oz size can. I put in the stainless steel pot support, added a little fiberglass cloth and it sure made a big difference in how the stove went from being a radical "tiger" down to a easy going, user friendly "kitten" All DIY gear makers should start out by making a Super Cat stove.

Just wanted to let you know that Rand from Traildesigns got in contact with me and I've ordered a Ti-Tri for the MSR 0.85 with Inferno insert. Will be fun to try out.

Great service from Rand. Norwegian dealers have a lot to learn from people like him.

Atomic stove in Gram Weenie Kitchen review. Used the stove 5-6 times. The screw is stripped inside the stove. It won't come out. I guess it expanded under heat and fused with the washer. Austin at MiniBull won't replace the stove. Says it is user error. This is a design flaw and I bet this why they don't make them any more. They lost me as a customer.

Anyone know a good alcohol stove replacement that will cook under the Foster's beer can and fit in the kit? I'd like it to be a reliable stove and cook a meal not just water.

Hey Christopher I have an atomic and mini atomic and have used then extensively for several years now, and have had no problems. Sounds to me like you have cross threaded the screw and that would be user error and shouldn't be replaced by tinny.
