Even after reading past posts I can't seem to find my answer to this… I'm 5'8" 140 lb. S or M?? I tried on a Marmot Zeus the other day and felt like I was in between a S and a M. After looking at this forum, I convinced myself to consider this Montbell over the Marmot.

Also… what is the best color for not wanting to be too flashy? Bark?

Thanks!

You'll probably be good with a small. I'm a hair under 6 feet and 160lbs and the medium fits me good.

A lot of the colors look subtle to me….slate blue, olive green, bark…

I'm 5'9 150lb – The medium was a perfect but tightish fit. I also have a long torso – it went down to just around my hip bone.
Its a really nice parka but there is not a ton of room underneath it. It looked good though.
I got the green, more of an army green; the light blue is nice.

I can't say specifically on Small or Medium, but in general from the Marmot and Montbell clothing I have owned the Marmot is going to fit larger than the MB. I wear XL in MB and Large in Marmot. If you feel borderline with the Zeus I'd think you'd want to size up to medium with the MB. I actually have the MB Alpine Light jacket in bark and it's a very nice color. GREAT jacket.

Another vote for a Medium. Montbell tends to run small. I normally wear a size large, but needed to go with XL, with Montbells jackets.
Some of their jackets are unisex as well, at least some were in the past.
I have the Men's Themrawrap Jacket in XL, and the Thermawrap Parka, in XL, which I believe is unisex. The unisex XL seems slightly smaller than the Mens XL, but both still fit me well.

I would vote for medium. I am 6'1" 150 and I ordered a medium Alpine Light online. A year later I went to try on the parka at a store and a small was too tight in the chest when my arms were moved in certain ways.

EDIT- and marmot stuff is sized for larger but shorter people (IMO) while montbell is sized for smaller but shorter people.

Jeff-

You happen to know a manufacturer that is sized for taller and smaller people?

Thanks

I'm 5'10",155 lbs. and the L in both the 08* UL Down Inner and 09* Alpine Light fit perfectly. Plenty of room for multiple base layers without feeling like the kid from the Christmas Story, but not too big when only wearing a single layer; just right! I ordered both a M and a L when I got my UL Down inner, and the M was not even an option. In my experience, a size up with Montbell jackets has worked out great;YMMV. Check your specs with possible base layers to be worn on the Montbell size chart. Good affordable insulation layers with great warmth to weight ratio! Enjoy

Perhaps it would be useful for people to mention what year/generation of Montbell jkts they are using. The older ones (ie. snap up) fit a full size smaller than the later generations like I'm using.

Not shure on the alpine light, but I just ordered the new style Montbell UL down inner jacket in a small and a medium to be sure. I would suggest doing the same from a company that will accept a return on the losing fit. I am 5'10" 139lbs and the small fit great, with room for a few light layers beneath. Medium was too big. The new styles are size labeled as suchon the tag: USA Small/JAPAN Medium.

I like RAB for their shells. I also like Arcteryx for their long sleeves. I just tried on my Montbell jackets (lazy Sunday) and they have long enough arms as well, but the hemline is a touch short. Not too big of a deal for a jacket though.

All of my new Patagonia stuff (baselayers, houdini) is cut pretty long as well, which is surprising since a lot of their jackets are short and baggy as well when I tried them on last season (R3 and R4).
