This is a perpetual problem. I'm washing all of my shell clothing right now and it seems like the recommended tech wash stuff isn't getting the smell of smoke out of my clothes. I always let them air out and that doesn't do it either.
Any tips?

usually gets the dank out of my synthetics. maybe it'll help for your shells
hmmm interesting suggestion. I bet that would work, and I doubt it'd have a negative effect on waterproofness, DWR. Anyone know?
It's a great smell! I've sometimes thought about putting my sport coats in my smoker, just so I could walk around campus smelling like a campfire!
But vinegar or lemon juice should do the trick!
Apply the vinegar or lemon with a sponge, then rinse. I use smoke and its smell to get rid of sweat smell.
Smoke is the least of the smells I worry about! On the other hand, if you use the same clothing both at home and on the trail, wood smoke smell is more of a concern.
The old housewife's remedy for anything smelly is good old 20 Mule Team Borax in the wash water. It also softens the water so the washing agent rinses out more easily. Just be sure to rinse several times! You probably don't want to use one of the cleaning agents that includes the DWR treatment in the washing agent. Instead, use a DWR treatment that can be put in the final rinse or sprayed on afterwards.
Baking soda is also excellent but, of course, more expensive. The same cautions re multiple rinses (which also help get the odor out) apply.
