25 inch wide closed cell pad from 40 inch wide pad

Exped Flexmat and Flexmat plus LW are 65cm/25.5″ wide and a similar price to the 40″ EVA, just in case that was of interest.  Although they are much heavier than 1/8″ EVA, the weight to r-value improvement will be in the same ballpark.

EVA comes from the factory in  1mx2m sheets, which makes 2x 20″ pads or 1x 40″ pad.  If someone sold 25″ pads they would have to figure out what to do with the 15″x80″ leftover strip.  A fresh utility knife and a long ruler will do the job.

Bruce, I have cut 1/8” and 1/4” GG pads using sharp scissors and they cut beautifully.

I use two 20×72 ccf’s cut from a 40×80 wrapped in one of the orange mylar em blanket things as a ground sheet.  Easy enough to roll/fold up.  Easy enough to separate for different uses.  Easy enough to stack or spread out depending on ground coverage desired.  I mostly use the ZLite Sol and that can be placed inside the shelter or sometimes wrapped up in the ground sheet depending on shelter style.  Always options.

Ridgerest Classic is 25″ wide with an R-value of 2. Can be cut shorter of course.

I’ve cut down the 1/4 inch pads from MLD with no problem, using a large drywall square to mark the line and scissors or utility knife to cut.  No problem. Sometimes they only list the 1/8 inch version on the website.  If so, call them and they may actually have the 1/4 inch or be able to tell you when the 1/4 in is available. I’ve used both the 1/8 and 1/4 and much prefer the 1/4 if R value is highly desired.   I don’t carry my 1/8 inch much any more, but it does have its place.

RE: the comment above from Chris K about the Ridgerest in 25 inch width; good idea…But… A few weeks ago I spoke with Thermarest / Cascade Designs seeking a 25 inch Ridgerest and they confirmed (and they were surprised) that the 25 inch pad is not currently listed on their internal product list and they do not know when or if it will be available.  All the Ridgerest pads are made in USA, so that response was a surprise to me (and to the customer service rep).

The rotary wheel cutters used to cut fabric work well to cut pads.  Best to get one with a larger wheel.  They make a nice smooth cut.

I looked at the wide Exped but seemed a bit pricey. I have the MLD 1/4 pad already, will try scissors.

I will use the left over pad material to create sit pads for the Scouts we are taking snow camping in March.

Any cutting tool will work. TBH, the pad will be just as functional if the edge isn’t perfectly straight and even. So in a pinch, use your teeth. :-)
