Made this one over the weekend. Cost: $1.99 for the hole punch, $.50 for the cat food(free can, my cat had to eat anyway, plus he got "special" food). Anyone have a tip for measuring alcohol more precisely for these stoves?

You can always use the measurement cups that come with medicines like NyQuil, Pepto, etc… (You can also ask at a pharmacy for these and they will usually give them to you if they have them. They are light and usually have ML and OZ on them

That looks just like the hole punch I bought for $.99 at Wal-Mart. Except mine got bent out of shape after every 3 or 4 holes so I ended up using a drill. The stove doesn't look as pretty when it's made this way but seems to work fine.

I'd really like to make one that looks better because it's really embarrassing when people ask about it and such. It looks really jack legged. I'm assuming I can find a sturdier punch at some place like Office Depot?

Thanks for the measuring tips.

My hole punch came from Hobby Lobby. They had a $3.99 version, but it was for punching fancy shapes and the round version looked a bit bigger than the standard single hole punch. I'm cheap too! As for bending out of shape. Nada. WalMart must have chased down the cheapest maker in china for theirs. Surprise, Surprise…..After punching 32 holes, no signs of damage to hole punch. I imagine there's a finite life to hole punches when you're punching through metal. When I was teaching, we had a tardy policy, where you would punch kids' ID card for each tardy. Well, my hole punch must have come from the same factory yours did. I went to punch through some kid's ID one day and the whole thing just folded like you described. I just used one end of my 3 hole punch after that. Kind of hard to get a cat can under a 3 hole punch though ;)

I made a few of those the other day too from a Potted Meat can (cheaper than cat food). I bought two cheapo hole punches in case one wore out. Well it took maybe 10 holes each before the punches were bent so bad they wouldn't punch. So, I went to the only other store in town, bought the only punch they had, which was equally cheap and looked absolutely identical. I swear they came from the same factory. However that punch easily knocked out several stoves with no bending or problems whatsoever.

Weird.

I haven't gotten into trying to meter fuel yet. I just squirt in some fuel and light up. I still need to make a snuffer/fuel recover pot cause putting the flame out is a pain and so is trying to recover fuel from the stove.

If you haven't already, here's the ultimate cat can stove website:

Metering is duscussed there.

That is an excellent tutorial on the Cat Stove. It's going in the blog links. Thanks, for the tip on the potted meat cans, but I don't consume anything in a can that can be bought cheaper than cat food ;)

Neither do I, that stuff went straight in the garbage. They won't even print the ingredients or nutrition on the label. Ugghh.
