I hadn't seen much info about Esbit usage with the Caldera Keg and wanted to share my experience.

My setup for my JMT hike this summer was as follows..

Caldera Cone and Heine Can 2.63oz
Supplied Cup and Stuff Sack 1.57oz
Gram Cracker, plate, zip bag .42oz
REI Waterproof matches (25) .6oz
Mini Bic .5oz
Ziploc bag for Heine can to keep cup clean .25oz

total is 6oz

3pack esbit tabs 1.55oz
FBC ultralight cozy .8oz

I only used the can to boil water for my freezerbag meal and a hot drink using one tablet. For each meal in varied ambient and water temps I was able to bring 24oz of water to a boil and pour what I needed into my mealbag. This would leave some hot water in the can to which I would add a bit more cold water and place back over the flame. Letting the Esbit tab burn out would leave me with 12-14 oz of water quite hot enough for coffee in the morning or tea at night!

I was very impressed with the performance and brought too many tabs for the first half of the hike. A fuel weight of 8oz (16 tabs) for the last 8days put my total cooking setup under 16oz!

I'll second the efficiency of this combo, and add that you can push the fuel efficiency even further by digging a hole to lower the Esbit Gram Cracker stand into, thus allowing you to lower the pot into the cone more, creating more trapped heat around the pot. This setup also increases efficiency in windy conditions, again only by a small margin, but if you are a gram counter then it all adds up!

Yup, Love my GVP System too! Instead of the caddy, I made a full reflectix cozy, which protects the can, insulates hot drinks, and keep the soot off the stuff-sack, when packed.

The can cozy is a good idea as well.

I used the cut down caddy they ship with the "H" setup as my drinking cup so I wouldn't have to wash the can. I normally like to cook in a regular pot but not for 15 days! The freezer bag cooking really worked out well with this setup.

Hey Steve! Sent you a pm. I like the new avatar photo!

I used the base of my Vargo Triad EX as an ESBIT stove (W/ an MSR windscreen) and it worked very well for a long week of Grand Canyon backpacking. I always used 2 tablets at a time for dinner and usually had half left so I added one tablet for breakfast and that was plenty for coffee and hot cereal.

Using two tablets is the key to faster cooking with EBIT/FireLite. Now I prefer FireLite tablets B/C they seem a bit hotter.
