For many years now I've been on a search for a good, lightweight map case. I've used all kinds until now, including the Ortlieb Watrerproof Map Case, a number of different nylon casing/ vinyl window options, vinyl map cases, and, of course, simple zip loc bags. The zip loc bags come closest to what I want, but I always find myself trying to figure out where to put it as I walk, some place that leaves me hands free, but is easily accessible. Sticking the map case into a jacket map pocket works okay, but then I still have to fiddle with getting the case out and stuffing back inside. I'd like something I can just lift up and read as I trying to find my way, without the hassle of pulling the case in and out of something, but that doesn't hang down in front like a dinner napkin. The pulling in and out also contributes to the wear and tear of the case and the map. So far nothing does quite what I would like. I even rigged a way to roll a vinyl case into a tube, using the neck strap, but it was always a pain to figure unlash the strap.

What are other people's solutions? Simple is always best.

All of the maps I buy are waterproof but sometimes, if it's a park map or something, I just use a ziplock bag.

This is what I use for those maps that are not already waterproof. I fold and carry maps in my shirt between buttons if I am referencing them often, if not I just carry them in my shoulder strap pocket.

Fold the map (or topo) where you can see what you need, and stick it in a ziplock.

I've used a plastic envelope designed to protect a standard 8.5×11 sheet of paper. They have holes in one side to clip into a binder and I'm sure they come from office supply stores. I got mine from work when they were throwing out a lot of stuff. It's very strong and works best if you cut your map into pieces of the right size so they are thin and flat.

As far as what to do with it while walking I don't have any ideas though. It's large and doesn't like to be folded so it needs a big pocket.

I like to use Aloksaks; they're super light, leak/water proof, and clear so you can view the map while inside if you really needed to. These will last a lot longer than ziplock bags and may be worth a look if keeping thigs dry is a must. I like to keep mine in the bottle holders of my pack; this makes it easy to grab while on the trail. It this also helps with keeping hydrated since my water is right there.
