You know, you used to be able to find wool clothing most anywhere before the poly and fleece revolution. I bought a good bit of stuff at the salvation army back in the day.

At any rate…

I am looking for a pair of med weight wool pants and a button shirt, suitable for hiking, hunting etc. Will use these over a merino or silk base layer in very cold weather.

I would really like something non scratchy like merino, but what I have found on line so far was way too expensive.

If anybody has a good link I would appreciate it.

I agree. I can't find what I want in wool anymore. My best ever winter pants were wool military surplus (I think part of a dress uniform); they had a hard finish and shed snow well. My second winter pants were actually part of an old movie usher uniform from Salvation Army– thick wool, bright blue with a gold ribbon down the side seams, gaudy but warm.

I find the synthetics OK for shirts,

The only lower-priced woolen pants/shirts I know of are Cabela's or LL Bean's. I wear Filson's whipcords over Icebreaker merino here in BC and have worn a lot of good woolen gear while working in the bush down to -40*, but, nobody would call Filson's "inexpensive"…..

Canadian Codet pants are not pricey, but, are quite thick, too warm for me, but, I seldom feel cold.

Go to any big department store in the mens department to look for wool or wool blend dress slacks on sale. In my area I can usually find light weight wool slacks at a price that can't even be approached by L.L. Bean or REI even on sale

When the slacks get a bit worn people are likely to contribute them.

You have to love thrift stores on the gold coast of Fla.

Soon as I walked in they anounced trouble with the registers. 15 minutes later okay all clothes are half price.

Scored….

2 light cashmere V neck sweaters, almost new – $4.50 each
1 med wt cable knit lambs wool sweater, almost new – $3.50
1 lightweight fleece turtle neck half zip – 9 oz – $5
One pair of light weight worsted wool pants – $4.50
One pair of med weight worsted wool pants – $4.50

Did not find a hat.
Did not find a wool shirt.

I think I will scout around some more tomorrow. Maybe I will find a pair of Vasque hiking boots or a nice pack. Who knows down here.

Cool, cool. You can also get fly 100% polyester '70's disco shirts. I'm thinking Halloween hike!

Well I got pleated pants, so I might as well get a blazer and a tie, bowler hat, cane, white patten leather shoes, couple of porters and go that route.

Give the people over at whiteblaze something to talk about, IE the weirdest things….

I was stoked on the cashmere though.

You get me troy. I dig on cashmere. You ever see that Sienfield?
I also wear white cotton/poly blend dress shirts on summer day hikes. The more worn out the better.
Did anyone mention sierra trading post yet?

The red dot.
Yes, a good one.

My judge of a surperb sweater is if I can wear it with no shirt. $9 for an olive green and a creme colored cashmere sweater that is a basically new is a smokin deal.

I told the cashier, he made my year.

Been there. I look around the internet a lot.
Going to the huge Salvation Army south of here tomorrow to see what I can find. I really only want a good sun hat and a lightish wool shirt.

Merino wool is also very easy to find. I have about 5 pair of cashmere or merino wool base layers as well as other creations made from cheap thrift store sweaters. It's really easy to alter the fit, add a hood or make into a pair of base layer bottoms, mittens, balaclava, or beanie.

Gees, I am hitting the jackpot lately.

Very heavy wool shirt in great condition – $4.50
Nice very light pair of hiking shorts – $3
Decent quilted inner flannel shirt. No good for hiking, but good any other time when its cold – $4.50

Nice pair of insulated nylon pants. I think these are ski pants. I had been hesitating on buying a pair of BPL insul pants for this winter. Nylon/nylon with polyfil insulation, no name brand. Weighs 14 oz, but I am not complaining for $5.
