I am mostly a trail hiker and have been using trail running shoes, specifically Brooks Cascadia 4, for most of my hikes, and backpack trips. Recently I joined a "Peak Bagging" hiking club that does lots of off trail and rock scrambling in the Sierra of Northern California. (Norcal Peak Baggers out of Sacramento.) Do I need to get higher shoes or boots for that kind of stuff?

I'd recommend getting some lightweight low-cut gaiters to keep rocks/dirt out of the shoes (dirty girl gaiters are great). While trail runners work just fine, I personally found the Cascadias to be very slippery shoes on rock and would suggest getting something with more grip. To me, Montrail's Gryptonite and shoes with vibram have felt a lot safer when scrambling. Your mileage my vary.

Merrell Moab Ventilator. I live in Telluride, CO. I'm surrounded by 14er's. Trust me. This is the shoe you want.

I have used Montrail CTC's on a number of 14ers in Colorado and really enjoy them. My climbing buddy likes a shoe by Merrill, but I am not sure which one. In Colorado boots are not necessary for peak bagging, at least they are not necessary for me and my climbing friends. Best of luck….

… where we bagged 14er's. Inov-8 flyroc 310's worked great for me when scrambling, negotiating skree. Although, I'm keeping my eye on roclite 315's as a replacement, since they look like they might have more protection/durability at the side of the foot.

Depending on the time of year that you all go out to climb, a shoe that can edge well in the snow is a plus–I like the now discontinued Montrail Hurricane Ridge. In general, though, you just want a shoe that fits you well and will offer some form of under foot protection from scree/talus. Montrail, I think, has several shoes with a full plastic shank. I use orthotics, so I stick with my usual thru-hiking shoe, Adidas Supernovas.
