I know you get what you pay for, but I'm a little hesitant to pay. I have a habit of buying clothing items on sale or clearance, and I'm so tight I just squeak at having to pay over $50 a backpacking clothing item…even though I'll pay $20 for a headnet.

Are there any offbrands of merino wool out there that are decent? I was looking at the backcountry.com brand, does anybody have experience with it?

I just got a backcountry merino t-shirt from steepandcheap–about $25 w/o shipping. Haven't worn it hiking yet, but all day yesterday around town with temps over 90*. Seems very well made, soft, thin, comfortable. Fits snug.

I also got a long sleeve zip neck from patagonia on their 30% sale–still, with shipping and tax it was well over $50. I think I'm really going to like it, tho.

I just got 2 of Backcountry's Merino Wool t-shirts. There's a coupon posted on the gear deal forum, basically 50% any Backcountry branded apparel. This made the cost per shirt around $22 before shipping.

The shirts showed up today and they seem to be well made. They are definitely a little more snug in the chest that I would prefer but I think they'll work out okay. I bought an Icebreaker on sale from Steep and Cheap a while back and I have to say I love the Icebreaker. I wore it three days in a row and at the end of the trip it still didn't smell. If the Backcountry shirts even come close to the comfort and performance of the Icebreaker it will have been money well spent, especially at $22 each :)

Note, the Backcountry sale may have ended on 7/31.

I think I found a place. I had better get my order in before I say it on here, although I don't know how many of y'all wear XXL. :)

tom,
provided you don't need base layers you can definitely get 100% merino wool sweaters at goodwill stores for $3 and then just have them professionally dry cleaned (approx $6) and you have a new elite wool mid layer for under $10
