I'm looking for suggestions for a short, highly breathable summer gaiter for a specific application, or possible suggestions for a fabric/pattern to use for MYOG of same.

Several weeks ago my oldest daughter and I were hiking in Hells Canyon area, descending from Hat Point to Snake River. Trails are very faint to non-existent where we were, and at lower elevations, are covered with calf-high dry cheat grass. Within a few minutes, our socks and trail shoes were crammed full of the spiky little seeds–very uncomfortable. Back home, I spent several hours picking seeds out of my shoes and socks.

I'll prob. be hiking the same area quite a bit over the next year or so (plan to do research on old farming settlements there) and really need a way to beat the grass. Gaiters just over the top of socks seems like the way to go, but I'm guessing would need to be tough, tightly woven and very breathable (as well as light). Conditions are arid, with temps by mid-June well into 90s at lower elevations.

Any suggestions for a commercially-made gaiter that fits the bill? I do know how to sew, and would be fine with MYOG ideas as well–I'm thinking either Tyvek or uncoated nylon might work, but don't know. I've never really worn gaiters before, so any info would help.

Thanks in advance.

Dirty Girl…$15 a pair. They work. They are cool, in many ways!

A Velcro adhesive tabs get bonded above the heel of you shoe. It is solid. You never have to worry about an instep strap breaking (and they will).

Edit: And >Xy Weiss< does good stuff.

I really like the Integral Designs Shortie Gaiter in eVent….lightweight, highly breathable, and waterproof. The only negative IMO is the cord on the bottom wears out quickly and needs replacing.

I second dirty girls. They are light weight, cheap and have many cool designs. You daughter
will love the different designs you can get.

Third vote for Dirty Girls.

Come on, where else can you get black gaiters with hot pink hearts (my next pair on order)?

Thanks–looks like I need to wait a few days for dirty girls owner to get back from fishing and the website'll be back up. Looked at the ID eVent gaiters and really like the look of them (price seems reasonable too).

Since Xy is out playing I hijacked This Link so you can get an idea of what’s up …

oh ya…. they also come in basic Black and simple Gray….

….but don’t go there when you can have way more fun.

edited: got the name right.

So light you won't even know they are on your feet.
The gaitor of choice for all the ultra trail runners who wear gaitors.
You don't need a waterproof gaiter.

p.s.
Greg
Catra is not the owner of Dirty Girl Gaiters, but she is one of the biggest fans and supporters.
Owner is Xy Weis.

Thanks Art.

Credit where credit is due.
I had the wrong name on the right face.

I'm a dirty boy, too. +1 and all that.

The first pair she sent were too big and she exchanged for smaller pair no questions asked! Very great company to work with and I'll be getting more in the future.

Thanks Greg. I'm a pretty boring guy, so the simple gray is pretty tempting.

What is the fabric?

I own a pair of ID eVent gaiters for summer. Nice gaiters BUT I'm modding them W/a Velcro closure up the back. Seems a PITA to have to remove boots every time you want to put them on or remove them.

Now if you want high gaiters I like Cabela's GTX gaiters but ya have to like their camo patterns too. Look at it this way, you'll blend into the scenery better and be "one with nature". Heh, heh

Those Dirty Girls look slick, never heard of them until just now, once again I read and learn on the BPL forum.

I'll throw another vote in favor of the ID eVent shortie. Extremely breathable, very light. The under-strap will wear out but can be replaced in seconds with whatever you have at hand. Good piece of kit.

I'll also jump in here with a recommendation for dirty girl gaiters. However, the velcro adhesive is prone to fail if it is wet fairly often. Mine and my wife's both came off on our last thru-hike, so we superglued them back on and now their bomber.
Mine are red with white skulls. I can't tell you how much they make me smile when I'm having a tough time on the trail.

Dirty Girls were designed primarily for ultra trail runners. Thus they fit over low top trail shoes, not high top boots. They are very light weight, very breatheable, not waterproof, and are made of stretchy material (nylon I think). There main purpose is to keep dirt and small rocks out of your low top trail shoes. For this purpose they work great, and many trail runners use them. They were not designed for bushwhacking, meaning I don't know how the stretchy fabric would hold up to constantly being caught on sharp bushes. But they are pretty cheap.

My gaiter of choice is the Simblissity Levagaiter.

BPL used to be the exclusive seller of this, but it's now back with Simblissity.

It looks like the top of the Inov8 is a sock, right? I'm afraid anything knit is likely to be a cheat grass magnet. Art (above) says the dirty girls are a stretchy material, so that might be a problem as well–too bad if so, cause the company and product sound great. eVent will work I think, but I don't want to use it if it's overkill, or will get too hot.

Anyone else have experience with this particular weed and understand the problem with the seeds? The end of the seed is very hard, and they work their way in as you walk with little one-way hairs on the husk–I had plenty get clear through the uppers on my trail runners.

Thanks for all the suggestions–keep 'em coming.

Anything cordura should work well. It will not be as breathable or comfortable, but it will definitely stand up to abrasion, barbs and such. REIs are okay and priced reasonably, plus they come in varying lengths.

David,
I use the Dirty Girls specifically for defeating seeds, as well as keeping debris out of my shoes. On our usual walks through dry Colorado meadows with cheat grass, needle and thread, and all the usual micro-burrs are out in abundance, I haven't had many problems with stuff sticking to the gaiters or getting through. Occasionally – sure. But I haven't lost a pair of socks to stickers in years.

I don't know what the material is.
It's not bullet-proof, but it works.

Excellent–sounds like they'll be perfect, Greg. I'll order a pair when she opens back up.

I'm another dirty girl fan. With one caveat. I wear holes in them and have to replace them about as often as i replace shoes. I've made a pair out of stronger fabric based on the design, but it's not a cool pattern :(

I've been using the SimBlissity Leva Gaiters for the last 3 years. Very light & well built. They still look great. They fit well and stay put. I really like them no complaints at all.
