Howdy all,
Just thinking aloud and looking to pick some brains…
I'm looking to buy a cold weather WM bag, so far it's between the Versalite (10 degree) and Kodiak (0 degree).
I currently own a Summerlite (32 degree) and a somewhat worn out 20 degree (more like 25, hence the summerlite purchase).

I'm thinking that the Versalite is the way to go for general winter camping in California…only 2lbs sounds good for a 10 degree bag. My only dilemma is mountaineering; do I want the Kodiak for colder temps, higher elevations, and later season stuff???
I know the 0 degree would probably be a bit overkill on many of my trips…
but on the same note, this will be the last bag I can buy for a while- I don't want to come up short.
I'm also sorta figuring I could just go with the Versalite and just rent a warmer bag for colder trips.

Any advice before I drop big $$$$?

Versalite.

I have a Versalite which weighs 3 oz over spec, so I assume it's overfilled. You can order overfilled bags from hermitshut.com, I believe. I've taken it to 0 with no problems. I suspect you could take it maybe 5-10 degrees further.

Since sales are few and far between for these bags, be sure to use fatwallet.com if you can – I got 6% back on my Versalite from backcountry.com

As the Versalite is fairly popular on this site, I would think you could resell it pretty easily as well, should you want to switch.

I hesistate to recommend a particular temperature rated bag just because everyone sleeps different. I for example sleep really cold. At any rate, I would go with the higher rated bag (the Versalite) and plan to just wear your clothing inside it as necessary on colder nights.

I do have a Versalite by the way, and love it. One thing of note is that the Xtremelite series WM bags do tend to get damp a little easier than the regular microfiber bags. I have one bag of each type, and I notice that the MF shell resists water much better. So if that is of any concern you may want to look into the Antelope as an alternative to the Kodiak as another poster suggested.

Antelope. Mine has been perfect, lots of down, warm. Shift the down if necessary for warmer weather. Good all 'round, colder weather bag. Antelope is same cut as Versalite but with 6 ounces more down. Great density of fill! Lofty but light. Yeah, it's a hair heavier–but that weight is basically all loft and warmth. Well worth it if you want to make sure you have one winter bag. I've taken my below zero with minor layers worn; conversely, I've used it in 40* weather. Can't say enough good about the Antelope.

It's a great bag, only thing is it does not repel water at all – more of a sponge.
