Zebralight recently added another headlamp to their line up. The H501R with a CREE XLamp XR-C red color LED. The light output specifications according to the website are:

High: 33 Lumens (2.4 hrs)
Medium: 4 Lumens (24 hrs)
Low: 0.8 Lumens (5 days)
Fast Flashing: 4Hz at 33 Lumens (5 hrs)
Slow Flashing: 1Hz at 33 Lumens (6 hrs)
Moon Mode: 0.1 Lumens (13 days)

It weighs the same as the old H501 (2.22 oz with battery and headband). Here is the link:

I'm seriously considering purchasing it. Thoughts?

I don't have experience with the light, but as far as red LED's, I can say ther are worth it.

I have a Petzl that has a red filter, and I'm really glad I have that option. I used the standard LED only when I need to see distances or the terrain is so complicated that I need the added illumination. For anything else, I used the red filter, and it I love it for not destroying my night-vision/blinding my fellow campers. I can actually stand face to face having a conversation and not have to flip my light off.

I agree, I mostly use red light as well. The only thing I don't like about this light though is that you ONLY have the red light option. I would rather they came up with a simple transparent red cover to go over the LED of the H501, that way you have both red and white light available. I suppose red electrical tape could effectively be used for that purpose, but it sucks when you need to take it off and put it back on.

I like this inexpensive headlamp, it has red, blue and white with the white being a 1 watt luxeon. I never use the blue, the red is most useful at night (the switch sequence is red-blue-white, which is the right order.) No silly flashing modes and runs on 1 AA battery. You can back off the battery cap so it doesn't accidentally turn on in your pack. Weighs about 2 oz with battery.

Sorry, can't embed link….

I use the Tacticca XP Adapt 95% with the red filter on. The only time I would use the white beam is to use for looking far off in the distance.

Red light is the way to go

I forgot to mention I'm only interested in regulated headlamps. From my research, Zebralight makes the lightest regulated headlamps in the market.
