Hut Hiking in Norway

Daniel I am just back from a hiking trip to Jotunheimen and another member here recently returned from Hardangervidda whilst I am aware of a third group who just returned from Rondane, so there are plenty of options. With regards to hut to hut I would would strongly recommend that you look at the Norwegian Trekking Association website (a membership will save you money at the huts which are very good) they have an extensive list of hikes as well as a lot of other information on huts, areas etc. By the way transport access via train and bus to trail heads is excellent.

As Roger said above the DNT offices in any other the major cities will provide all the maps and up-to-the-minute information you could possibly need. The huts are astonishingly well equipped (wood burner heated hot tub with views to die for anyone?!) so you'll need very little in the way of equipment if you choose to travel this way. I just returned from a four day trip to the Hardangervidda, Europe's largest mountain plateau and whilst I took a tent and chose to camp I knew I could escape to one of the huts in case of severe weather! In winter they are a welcome refuge at the end of a long days ski touring.

The hardest part will be trying to choose a national park or region to visit. It's hiking/backpacking nirvana over here!

Thanks for the tips. I havent had much of a chance to get down to planning the details yet, but I'm planning to buy my plane tickets this weekend (flying from Brussels) and then go from there. I'm glad to hear that public transport works ok for getting to the trails, that is something I was a bit worried about.

What are your recommendations for reserving things (trains and huts) ahead of time? I've read that the huts never turn people away, but I find that hard to believe. Any experience there?

Yes – book trains in advance. Buses/coaches not so important.

I've never heard of anyone getting turned away from a hut, DNT or private. Worse case scenario (very bad weather/lots of hikers) you'll be sleeping side by side on the floor!
