I found that scratches in the pot work, but they can be hard to see, or find at times. I finally used a center punch to put dimples in my pot at half cup intervals. The are much easier to find and see.

I have put marks inside my Titan kettle and Titan mug. They stay on quite a long time. I did need to refresh them once in 4 years.
For one JMT trip I took an Aquafina bottle and put measurements lines on two sides. One side had them going from the bottom for use as a measuring cup when empty. The other side had them marked from the top down for easier use when it is full. The markings were in rough shape by the end of the trip but it worked.
I also have a Platy bottle that I put markings on with a Sharpie.
