The Ti goat bivy http://www.titaniumgoat.com/Bivy.html and the equinox bivy http://www.backcountrygear.com/catalog/tentdetail.cfm/EQ3000. are probably your cheapest options for a bivy to give you some extra protection under a tarp.

Making a bivy is also a good MYOG project – he says never having made one.

TiGoat makes an affordable an well thought of bivy.

Oware also makes gear that is a very good value, Oware currently is running a 20% off sale on bivies if you mention BPL when you order. Dave posted this sale information just today, see post "Oware bivys 20% off this week for BPL folks".

I think you would be very pleased with either selection.

Does the Equinox have a mosquito window? It has been hard to find out.

    Thanks,
    Chris

From what I can tell it doesn't have a mozzie window.

+1 on the Oware bivies. Simple and light.

I have a BPL and TiGoat bivy.
The TiGoat wins every time because the insect window version makes for a much less claustrophobic feel than the BPL one. Weights are very close.

The Equinox bivy does not have mosquito mesh, but is a great value, especially if you don't mind wearing a head net or adding mesh.

I will either be using the bivy with a MSR E-Wing or a poncho tarp.

The Equinox is the very cheapest and one of the lightest. I wonder if the mesh storage bag is big enough to use as a bug headnet. Free shipping from Backcountrygear.com is a plus

You can use this http://www.gossamergear.com/cgi-bin/gossamergear/Bug-Canopy.html but why?
It adds weight and is much more fiddly.
My friend and I are were in NZ in a Goite Hex where the sand flies were swarming and he had much more trouble in his bivy with the GG bug canopy than me in my TiGoat.

The mesh bag the Equinox bivy comes in is about 5"x4", so no it's not gonna cut it as a bug screen.

I guess I could try it without a head net. I usually have a fire going that keeps mosquitoes at bay. If not,its raining and they aren't out anyway.

It's right here on this site. Presently out of stock, but a fine tarp camping UL bivy.

    Fire?
    At 3am?

Take my advice, get it with the mesh. I couldn't stand it personally without that feature.

By 3 am the mosquitoes are sleeping too.

    Actually, most mosquitoes are nocturnal.
