As a big fan of Salmon – I was curious what the difference would be in terms of calories. Going to nutritiondata.com, closest options I could find were:
Fish, salmon, red, canned, bones removed (Alaska Native) (161 calories per 100 grams, 52 from fat)
VS.
Fish, sardine, Atlantic, canned in oil, drained solids with bone (208 calories per 100 grams, 103 from fat)
Anyone have numbers off an actual can of sardines?
Season Brand Sardines in pure olive oil:

Total fat 7g
Sat. fat 1.5g

I saw this and wandered over to the backpacking food bins and grabbed a couple packets of wild salmon :-)
Depending on packaging is the serving size of course..lord, gotta love that.
So lets say you have a 3-ounce pouch:
90 calories
3 grams fat
15 grams protein
While not high in calories it is very good for you!
That's why you bring the container of olive oil and/or Parmesan cheese! :)
You know it, Di!
I love pasta tossed with wild salmon, some freeze dried olives, olive oil, black pepper and a ton of Parmesan cheese. Maybe some True Lemon powder as well ;-) If only I could get freeze dried capers….
Smoked oysters (from a tin – but you can also find them in foil pouches) with smoked cheddar cheese (Tillamook) on some crackers makes an excellent lunch.
I find the best dried items at local asian markets:
– Mushrooms, all types
– Lechee fruit
– Ginger
– SARDINES!!!!!!!!!!
– Octopus
– Sqiud
– Seaweed
Oh man! I just spend hours goofing off "researching" and buying options. Then find it hard to await a chance to hike, so I just start using them at home for my meals.
I love the stuff at the Asian markets… and I always learn something new when I am there.
