Sorry – long.

Been trying to put something together mostly for hunting as a survival/comfort pack. I have been using a small day pack with just a normal survival kit in it. Problem is try to sling a rifle over your shoulder with a backpack strap is not too comfortable, so I thought I would see if I could cram an entire summer+ backpack overnight kit into a Fanny pack. One of those deals where I might just want to stay out for an entire night.

Found Kelty convertable Cardinal packs on sale at Sunnys and at $15 so I figured why not since I can always extend it into a backpack. Weighs 18oz.
I plan to add a back pocket to it, but thats about it.

Size is about 10x8x7

Water will go in the side pockets via 2 1 qt platys.

Food will go into the new back pouch or stuffed inside if its small enough.

If I am going to use it strictly for survival only the sleeping bag, themorest and a few other odds and ends will stay home.

Weighs 5-#5oz dry.

I could easily shave 1# off the weight by dropping some of the comfort items and building a lighter pack, which I probably will do.

Pictures….

First off is the bag. Made it for under $20. On sale super light nylon from walmart and 3/8″ polyfill from Joann on sale. Velcro foot area with a web and a drawstring foot box. You can completely open it up or close the footbox, vent the foot box etc. This was a test run for the real deal with materials from thruhiker, but I like it for a super thin summer bag. I live in the SE so it never gets too cold at night in the summer so its fine for that. Need to add some straps to the upper part.

Thanks for your list. I'm gleaning it for items I may have forgotten in my own pack. Ya never know when that never-used signal mirror will come in handy for removing an object from your eye – or checking for facial zits. (Hee, hee)

Its really more of a grab and go hunting pack and where I hunt I know the area very well and dont really need a map.

That said I think it is rapidly turning into an super ultralight pack too. In that case for longer treks I would want a good map, better water setup and some other odss and ends.

I am really a tent person, but a 5# pack with all this stuff in it is really apealing to me.

Gees way back when I thought I was doing good if I could keep my pack under 40#.

Ditch the soap, you already have hand sanitizer. Ditch the deoderant. You're hunting. You should stink. Make a choice on your knives. You have too many. One is enough. Ditch the knife sharpener, unless the animal you open up and gut will dull your blade. How much toothpaste do you really need? Put a small amount in a contact lens case. Be sure never to use it again for contacts. (ask me why I know this) Throw in a bandana. It's a great multi-use item.

Thanks for the input.

Well it has started turning into a full backpacking setup, thus the soap, deoderant and whatnot. The soap is a very small amount of soap and its good for washing out wounds.

I definately wont be using deoderant or soap when hunting. Just thought I would put together more of a full setup just as a test. IE I could grab it to go hunting, take it for a day or two hike etc.

I have changed the deoderant to the setup I read here. Basically microwave stick deoderant into small plactic case. Very light.

I have a very small amount of toothpaste. Actually everything is cut down to a minimum.

Yep too many knives. Swiss army would be my choice if only one small one. I have been on many hiking and camping excursions where all I carried for a knife and saw was a Swiss Army Knife.

Neck knife and shapener are optional. Dont know why, but I always like to carry 2 knives. Dont really need a shapener, but dull knives drive me nuts.

The Kabar is more of a last ditch effort and survival item that I carry when I am hunting pigs in the woods.

Its really too big to dress game or clean a fish with. It is however big enough to chop and baton wood with or self defense if need be. If I could only take a few survival items into the woods, one of them would be that Kabar knife, along with a small pocket knife, Em medical bivy bag, poncho/tarp, striker, paracord, bandana, water bottle and water tablets.

If I could only carry one, it would be that Kabar or a similar knife.

An Orange bandana is on the list above.
