hi everyone, I'm going on a several-month trip to China and SE Asia, mix of city-touring and light hiking. I'm looking for a lightweight, breathable crossover shoe.

People suggested a trail runner, so I got a pair of Salomon XA Pro 3Ds. However the sole presses up uncomfortably against the front inside of my feet, and gives me sore feet very quickly when running on hard surfaces.
Also when wearing them my feet roll inwards slightly, suggesting the support isn't that good.

Would people suggest sticking with trail runners, or looking isntead at a cross-trainer/multisport or crossover shoe, like the Merrell intercept?
I thought about light hikers, but I don't need the rigidity on hard roads and I don't want to wear down the sole too quickly.

I've been told that most trail runners will have the problem as the salomons, in not giving enough support for a slight over-pronator.

thanks, hope someone can help

John,

As you are in Australia you should have easy access to the Columbia range of shoes which I have found to be very good for both on and off trail use.

Although I can’t comment on what they will be like in the humid conditions of SE Asia they haven’t caused me any issues in high temperatures, and they breath quite well (depending on the model you look at).

There is also a review on the New Balance MT8750R by Roger Caffin who is also on this side of the world.

Let us know how you get on.

Cheers

I too have the Salomon XA Pro 3Ds, but I switched out the insoles and it radically improved the shoes handling.

I use superfeet insoles, they work for me but not everyone. An upgraded insole may be worth trying as the overall design of the shoe should do what you need quite well.

I am looking at the Columbia pagora and tagori.
Maybe at the Keen targhee too
