I would like to ask for help, please. I am compiling a list of backpacks that would answer the following criteria:

  • weight of 25 ounces maximum
  • minimum volume of 2 000 cubic inches
  • maximum volume of 3 000 cubic inches
  • a belt
  • a belt that is not just a webbing, or at least not on the hip-bones: I am skinny and prone to chaffing in that area, so a Granite Gear Virga style belt kills
  • somewhat comfortable shoulder straps: I attach a camera pouch with a heavy DSLR inside onto the shoulder straps so it hangs on my chest
  • preferably narrow, shallow and long
  • wears well on a long torso: I am 5,90 feet
  • great compressibility with compression straps
  • two ice axe loops

I have found, thus far:

  • Granite Gear Wisp (which I have and like very much)
  • GoLite Jam

Would you suggest anything else corresponding to the above criteria, please?

It is heavier than 25 ounces with its back panel inside, but you should consider the Golite Infinity. Very lightweight for the features and load carrying ability. Not sure how light without the back panel, if it is removable.

I would prefer something lighter, and simpler, if possible, please. Without the pockets, top lid, etc.

How about a pack that weighs 5oz less then your max. and gives you 200cu in extra?

ULA CONDUIT 20oz 3,200cu in

That looks cool! I will definitely look at this pack more thoroughly.

By the way, your link is to the Catalyst, you may wish to edit your post… For posterity. ;-)

Shipping a parcel from USA to France or Switzerland costs at least 35 USD. If I am not satisfied with the product, I have to pay a return ticket of equivalent amount. So I would most appreciate your feedback.

Please keep us posted.

The Mountain Laurel Designs Prophet 40 meets almost all of your requirements. It weighs 12.5oz, has a main pack volume of 2000ci, plus 2 pockets adding another 540ci, a belt with optional (at extra cost) 1/8″ padding, a sternum strap, and 2 torso lengths.

It is extremely narrow/tall – one of the most in this respect that I’ve see, with these dimensions: 11″ X 6.5″ X 28″. The weight on the MLD packs is felt less since they ride so close to the torso, and do not hang out too far. Compressing the pack should be quite easily done with its V-strap top and a suite of bungees.

Also, the Prophet 30 is a similar pack made from lighter material and a little smaller, at only 4.25oz. You don’t get some features such as the optional padded hip belt, however.

I am unsure as to whether or not traditional ice axe loops are included as per your requirement, however it may be possible to strap them to the bungee hookups on the edges of the pack.

Please visit Mountain Laurel Designs for more information.

I talked to Ron from MLD about this pack, and he says he is redesigning, maybe getting rid of the AL stays and replacing it with a pad pocket. he’s a member to this forum, so maybe he will chime in with any details.
mike!
