Both are cheap on Patagonia's website now and i think I'm going to buy one. I usually prefer no hood when wearing a fleece but I like the idea of being able to pull the hood up while in my bag at night. What do you guys think?

I have some really nice beanies and balaclavas that I really like and used to wear a lot. Since I got a R1 hoody I leave them home and never wonder where I put my head gear, especially at night.

I used the R1 hoody for a number of hikes and one long bike tour in 2007-08. What made it such a great, versatile piece of gear was the form fitting hood. Unfortuatly mine started to unravelve at a number of spots so I returned it and replaced it with another less expensive system. I think my hoody was just a lemon because I haven't heard of anyone else having any problem with them.

+1 for the hood.

I have a brand new size L R1 (in the burnt orange) that i just didn't have time to return. I ordered a medium and large and kept the medium.

I'm going to throw it up on Gear Swap but if you want it i'll let it go for $50 plus shipping. PM me or email me at danasmiddy @ gmail . com

I love the versatility of the hoody and don't know how i got along without it! :)

Edit: hahaha i just realized i'm wearing the other one in my avatar. So as a reference, that's the orange color of the hoody.

Hoody. Just know that this is a really warm piece and you won't likely be wearing it if the temps are +45F

How's the fit on the R1 hoody. Does it seem to run long in the sleeves and torso? I'm 6'6", but only 200 lbs. So for proper fit I'm a large, but an L is usually much to short so I end up having to get XL which usually still aren't long enough, but are always too baggy. Any advice on fit would be greatly appreciated.

The fit is long, but for 6'6" you might still need a large. I'm 5'10", 175lbs. The large was too baggy on me, the medium a perfect fit. The length for me comes down to about crotch level. My torso is 18.25" for reference.

I believe Mr Smiddy is also a tall man, perhaps he can chime in.

The fit is long so that you can cover traditional clothing gaps. I wear a small and the fit is true to Patagonia's listed measurements. It fits snuggly by itself or over a capilene 1 short-sleeve shirt.

Also, it is crazy warm. Don't expect to wear it outside of winter or fringe seasons.

R1 Hoody Sale

Apparently this isn’t the standard R1 and there are some minor differences to note. See the review on the page.

Patagonia has the R1 Hoody on sale in the Cayenne- Bon Fire Orange color and available in sizes S – M – L – XL.

Item code is #11468 and price is $69.00, not bad.

James is correct, i'm a tall man. Not too tall but i'm 6'2" and i wear a medium. Fits perfectly over my 150wt icebreaker zip.

I found the large to be way too baggy for me. The medium's fit in the sleeves and torso is more than adequate.

Didn't hear from Ben so I'm posting the extra R1 I ordered on Gear Swap today for $50. It's a large and the orange color.
