what's the verdict on these – is one preferable to the other? It's for wind, not wet. I inadvertently ordered both (senility setting in?) and love them both, but one has to go back. The montbell is 2.4 oz and montane is 4oz. But I want performance rather than wt to be the deciding issue. Thanks, Barbara

The Montbell is very windproof but, as a result, doesn't breathe very well. And you can't beat it for weight. I can't speak to the Montane. A lot depends on how you intend to use it. I prefer the Montbell for its lightness and because I very seldom, if ever, hike in it. It only comes out at rest stops, in camp hanging out, or as part of my sleep system if the temperatures drop to the comfort threshold of my sleeping bag. If you want a jacket that breathes well enough to hike in, I would consider other options.
If you want performance, then you will most likely want some breathability.
I used to own a non-breathable, older model Golite wind jacket (Helios). Great to put on when arriving at some wind-blown mountain top at the end of a hike — but very annoying to use along the trail where cold winds and sunlight alternate.
But more breathability isn't automatically better. My current wind jacket is a very breathable Patagonia Houdini. In this case, the jacket is easier to use while hiking (although it can still steam inside if you hike hard or fast enough) — but it just doesn't block cold, howling winds as effectively.
IMO, something like the Marmot Ion can be a good compromise (a bit less breathable than the Houdini but a better wind breaker than the Houdini) — depending on your location and hiking terrain.
Finally, I am guessing that the Montane Featherlite compares to the Patagonia Houdini???
Decided on the montbell – good reviews, 2.5 ozs, I'll be using it in the summer in the Sierras and likely only for windy passes and cooler evenings, mornings. I have a driducks jacket for rain. Thanks for the info – Barbara
