Alright, I'm finally ready to give chlorine dioxide tablets a try. I found that a store very close to me carries them. I do not want to go all the way to the Spokane REI so I'm hopng these at the Cabela's are the same as the ones sold here on BPL?

wow, I should have read the customer reviews before asking that…I guess they are the same :)
OK, tried em' out for the first time this weekend. First, before leaving for a 15 mile round trip weekend in Athol, Idaho, I tested them out at home. They seemed to work fine after a couple of tests and so I took them with me on the trip. That trip I had to refill my 3L CamelBak 3 times, using a total of 9 tablets. The packaging was easy to open with my knife (but I found it's good to seperate the packaging into squares so as to simplify usage of the tablets). They do not leave much aftertaste, and that which it does I did not mind at all since I was carrying 1 ounce of water purification vs. a pound for a filter. I did have to wait a few hours but I had enough patience for it. While wating, it gave me time to take a nap and relax under my tarp while evryone else was still setting up their tents =p
Overall, on a scale of 1/10 (10 being the best), I would rate them a 9. IMO, the only flipside to them are the time it takes but I guess you could get over that by doiung it overnight.
cheers
The trick to avoid waiting is to arrive at your water source at meal time, with a little water in your container. You have some water to drink, you boil your meal water, and start the tablets in your water containers.
The REAL trick to fast drinking water is to use a SteriPen.
I use Katadyn chlorine dioxide tabs only for my hydration bladder. Keeps it clean and is easy to use.
Then I use my SteriPen for treating water for my bike bottle that I carry on my belt for "instant" drinking water. Both systems together are FAR lighter than a filter pump and both are more effective on all pathogens including viruses and hard-shelled bacteria like cryptosporidium.
Granted, if I were counting every ounce on a tough trip with lots of climbing I'd take only the Katadyn tablets.
