I am planning an expedition run of the GR10 in France next summer. This goes from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean through the Pyrenees mountain range (approx 850km). Has anyone hiked this before? If so, what are your opinions of it's runnability? I am also trying to get info on the Sentier Piemont – does this connect or replace a portion of the GR10?

Thanks,
William

Hi, Have you had a look at the Cicerone Press (cicerone.co.uk) guidebook for the GR10? I've got their guide for the GR20 which is pretty good.

lol, just noticed you've also posted on themds.co.uk !

I don't know anyone who has run it but there are a couple of fell runners on http://www.ukclimbing.com/ who may have some beta. I can't really see any issues as the GR20 is runnable and that's the 'hardest' grandes randonnées route. Depends what terrain you are used to running!

Also try posting on http://forum.fellrunner.org.uk/

I have walked the GR10 and the GR11. You would need a huge support team to run it.
What a pity to have to focus all your energy on running instead of enjoying the route.

Cheers

Its runnable without problem or support, some guy even run the HRP :).
When you run you can get much more km between resupply.
Im not sure i would rate GR20 as the hardest, try the GR1 in " La reunion" .
Even if its true the people running GR1 ( "la diagonale des fous " ) do it in 1+day, while its 2 for the GR20.

Thanks to everyone for their excellent advice – very helpful. This run has been a dream of mine for several years. I think I could do it in 21-28 days of good effort.

Yes, I posted on mds.co.uk – I ran the Marathon des Sables this spring – lots of fun… I'll check out the fell runner site – great tip!

I could be wrong, but I don't think you'd need much of a support team for the GR10 – there are huts along the route. I would guess some minimal supplies in a pack, perhaps a package in post restante at the midway point, and voila! – easy (oops, pretty sure I'm going to regret saying that some day).

Expedition running and hiking are not so different. You still get to see all of the great views, to relax at scenic points (in fact, you get more time potentially, 'cos your travel time is so much less).

Interesting the reference to the GR1 (Diagonale des Fous) – thinking about racing that this fall. That is a very hard course.

So it seems doable to run the GR10 – I have the Cicerone guide book, but it's always useful to get multiple opinions. I looked at the HRP, but the trail looks trickier, and resupply more tenuous.
