Came across this old manual on camping and walking in 1877, on Project Gutenberg. Pretty interesting techniques and equipment. The gear list will probably make most of you cringe! Check it out.

I’ve just glanced at the writing… amazing how the basics really don’t change.
I wonder about animals and baggage wagon though…
Jan 30, 2006 at 8:27 am #1349560The book East of The Divide deals with early explorations in the North Cascades, there is a chapter about a single woman ,Miss Wheeler, renting a mule and traveling for 40 some days alone in the North Cascades. That was an excellant link.
