Hi all –

I've been keeping my eyes open for a 48" (120 cm) self inflating sleeping pad for a while. I'm 24, and side-sleep like a baby on my five-year old regular length prolite 3 pad. The two pads I'm considering (and make sense for my budget) are:

Prolite (small) 47", R = 2.2, 11 oz.

and

Montbell UL CS 120: ~47", R = ?, ~13.5 oz according to Prolitegear.com

I'll be taking a one week Wind River trip in late August and an 11-12 day Superior Hiking Trail (northern MN) trip in late September, and want to be warm at night. I anticipate temps down to freezing, and will be using a WM summerlite inside a tarp/bivy or double rainbow tarptent. I sleep a little cold.

I don't think comfort will be an issue for either, but I'd like to know if anyone has ever figured out an R value for the Montbell pads, or can offer a subjective comparison or input. My understanding is that the Montbell pads have continuous foam inside, whereas the foam in the prolite pads is waffle-cut. If the Montbell pads are warmer by R.5 or so, I think they may be a better option for me. If not, I can always add a 1/8" thinlite (already have one) to the bottom of the prolite for sleeping and use it around camp, etc. I think I can find either pad for $60 or cheaper after a discount is taken.

Thanks!

Matt

Hi Matt, I think the R-Value of the Montbell pads is over R-3, but this is a guess. Here's my line of resoning: the BMW Torsolite is R-3.5. It uses a die-cut foam surrounded by a solid foam to limit heat loss around the perimeter. If the Montbell is using solid foam, it should perform similarly. I know a number of reviewers have mentioned it seeming warmer than a Prolite 3.
