I'm trying to decide which option to get. The bivy will serve two purposes; keeping bugs at bay while stargazing and to keep sideways rain and splash off of me when using the tarp. Not both at the same time, obviously :P

Which would be better? I am leaning towards the net hood, but I can't tell if you can get weather resistant coverage when you need to batten down the hatches, but still keep it open a little but to get some breathability.

Does the net hood option only have the one zipper at the mesh? Can you cover up with the water resistant portion of the hood if needed?

Can the net window option have the water resistant hood rolled back for star gazing?

I just got my Tigoat Bivy from Chris Wallace (Thanks Chris!). While I haven't had a chance to try it outside yet, I have done some living room camping.

I can only speak to the full hood. But essentially there are two zippers (unless you order the side zipper option – then there would be three), one for the net hood, and one for an outer hood, made out of the same material as the top layer (imagine wearing two hoodies at one time, only the inner hoody is made out of mesh). I think you can pitch the outer hood so that you could use the bivy in light rain, though I can't attest to the waterproofing of the outer layer material.

Hope that makes sense. I can post pictures if you'd like.

That is perfect. It's also exactly what I was hoping for, but I couldn't tell from the single picture.
Thanks!

I also have a TiGoat bivy with full net hood courtesy of a BPL member. Mine also has a 24" side zip. The side zip doesn't add a zipper. The zipper just continues down the side. It is a two way zipper. The net hood zipper is one way and just goes across the chest. Both the net hood and the outer hood have pulls attached for tying the hoods up and away from your face. I have about 18" between my face and the hood in that case, or enough room to hold about a map. The hoods should be used individually. Either rolls or tucks back when using the other. You could have the net hood extended inside the outer hood, but it would block access to the zipper pull for the outer hood. You'd have to unzip the net hood before you could unzip the outer hood, and the net hood serves no purpose when the outer hood is in use. The zippers are not of the waterproof variety used on rainwear. There is a storm flap on the outside of the outer zipper for water resistance, but the fabric is not waterproof, only water resistant, so I don't think you'd want to have the bivy as your only weather protection if rain was a possibility. The bivy is roomy, enough space for my long Marmot Sawtooth 15 degree winter bag.

Below are some pictures illustrating the various ways the hoods can be pitched. That's my sleeping bag inside for contrast.

Here is the net hood only. The shiny black material at the bottom is the inside of the outer hood folded back.

Here is the outer hood picthed. You can see the storm flap and two zipper pulls. tigoat2

Here is one of the options you asked about. The outer hood mostly pitched for splash protection but space left for breathability and still using the net hood.tigoat3

James, Thank you so much for those pictures and explanation. I have wanted to understand how the full head net worked with this bivy, but even after reading numerous posts and reviewing tigoats site I still couldn't really understand it. I've got it now. It looks like a great bivy.

Yeah, TiGoat leaves a bit to be desired as far as illustrating their excellent products. If it hadn't popped up for a great price on gear swap, I might not have taken the plunge myself.

Also, the side zip is not a standard feature. It was added as an option by the BPL member I bought it from. It's exactly what I wanted though. adds ~.5 oz to the weight.
