All,
I have a new Katadyn Hiker Pro which I used on a just-completed 9-day trip, pumping something on the order of 200 liters. I am looking for help on figuring out if something is broken.
On one of the last days, we were pumping out of a scummy pothole (most of water on the trip was pretty good). The pump was getting quite hard to push, when suddenly it became much easier, the inlet hose started jumping around a lot while pumping, and the water moved dramatically slower.
Examination in camp revealed that there a little white rubber widget in the inlet, with a slit in it. It was protruding outwards, as pictured here:

Pushing it back in didn't persist; a little pumping and it would stick out again.
On returning home, I followed the directions in the instruction sheet (fill filter halfway, swirl around). Now, the filter seems to work OK, but it's a bit noisy. Takes about 1:20 or 1:30 to filter a liter of tap water.
Thoughts? What's this little white widget? Is this normal behavior for this filter, or do I have a problem?
Very much appreciated,
Reid
