In need of advice!

I’m heading off to Africa for two months this summer and am looking for a new pack. Ideally, I want to take my old Arcteryx Khamsin 38, but given the range of climates I’ll be experiencing I think it’s too small for this length of trip. I’m looking at bags around 50L and have narrowed it down to 3:

-Arcteryx Khazri 55
-Granite Gear Meridian Vapor
-Granite Gear Vapor Flash

I want a light weight, but durable bag with minimum complications. I really don’t care much about comfort, and would prefer the slimmest suspension/belt system possible. Unfortunately I can’t find any of these bags near me (NY, NY). The Arcteryx bag looks fantastic. I looked a Khamsin 50 last night and liked it, though that particular bag has way too much going on. I also don’t like the new “glove friendly” buckles they are using.

The Meridian Vapor is perfect (I really like the full-length zipper), but I’m worried that the 70D ripstop construction could leave it vulnerable to punctures while on the road. The Vapor Flash is the same bag, minus the zipper and with stronger materials. I don’t own any GG bags, but I hear really good things. My only concern was the belt/suspension system, as it looked rather bulky. Does anyone have any further details on the vapor system?

If there are other bags I should be considering, I’m open.

Thanks!

Hi – the larger Arcteryx packs provide a fair amount of issue for me with respect to fit. Their framesheets are too stiff and in combination with dual stays, I am unable to get the pack close enough to my body.

I am a big fan of Granite Gear packs. If you are concerned with abrasian resistance on the areas that do not have Cordura (which is as strong as anything Arcteryx has and lighter to boot), then the Flash is the better choice as it has 100d v.s. 70d nylon. Otherwise, the Meridian and the Flash are essentially the same pack….and very comfortable.

I am also a big fan of Granite Gear packs. I don't care for floating lids at all though, so I have a Vapor Trial (and a Latitude Vapor that I never use anymore). They are very comfortable as long as you stay under the 30 pound maximum carry weight.

My wife has the Meridian Vapor. She likes the lid, but I don't think she really ever uses the zipper.
