I will be spending next year traveling and backpacking through central america and am trying to decide on a two person shelter system that provides full bug protection, full floor and a reasonable level of breathability for jungle conditions. My planned treks will have nights ranging from super humid coastal jungles to subalpine cool nights with moderate winds and rain expected.

That being said I am debating between the two above options (SMD Europa 2 v. HS Squall 2 TarpTent) and a simple 8×10 silnylon tarp setup with a homemade bugnet/floor. From what I have read in the individual reviews on this site of each of the tarptents as well as the comparison review the Europa 2 appears to be a great option with regard to complete bug protection, a moderate level of storm protection and decent ventilation, but I have no experience with single walled shelters and fear that I might be putting myself through humidity hell in the warm tropical climatates with this shelter (even left in the vestibule-open configuration with added ventilation). Any advice, experience or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

The Europa 2 has not be made for several years, so unless you already have one, it's a moot point.

Is going to be WET! Regardless of what you go with any non-breathable shelter will be a moisture trap on the inside . Having a tarp and bug net would be a good option if the tarp could drip outside of the net.

bob,

should have noted on my original post but i have access to a used europa through a friend

If i do end up going with the siltarp/bug net combo any recommendations for a lightweight and durable prefab hang-under bugnet/floor combo? My sewing skills are absolutely atrocious

thanks,
B

another option is a double rainbow with the clip in liner to catch condensation- have not used it so i cant comment on its effectiveness.
