After purchasing a SMD Starlite that I am still up in the air about I turned my attention to the Circuit. It seems like it should fit my needs, but I was curious about an issue that I had read about with the front pocket. It seems that when the pack is full the front pocket basically becomes unusable. I wanted to see if any owners of the 09' version found found this to be true.

Pre-2008 models. The newer ones have a stretch front pocket that can accomodate gear even when the pack is full. The previous versions would do that too but the top of the pocket did not stretch so you had to load geat in the front pocket prior to putting gear in the main bag. After you did that it was almost impossible to get gear out of the front pocket without taking gear out of the main pocket first.
You are somewhat right, at least on the one I have. The pocket itself isn't rendered useless when the pack is full if you take off the shock cord. Basically, ULA put it on too tight. I simply took it off and put on another with more slack and now the pocket and the shock cord work just fine. Just this past week I had the pack completely full with the outside pocket holding my rain gear, food for the day, ground cloth, and a windshirt. Had I not changed out the shock cord, yes, it would all be totally useless.
I'm actually a little disappointed because I pointed this out to ULA and felt adding several more inches of shock cord was a pretty easy fix. I've had my pack for over 2 months and its disappointing to see that this hasn't been corrected.
David – Thanks for the info. Its nice to see that it has been updated.
James – Thanks for lending me your insight on it. I can understand how that could be a bit disappointing, but it sounds like it should be an easy workaround. BTW, how do you think a contrail would fit in there?
I'm not sure about the Contrail as I don't have an experience with it. The picture on their website is deceiving. I'd also have a hard time believing ULA would allow the outside pocket of any pack to be useless when the pack itself is full as I know I always use the outside pocket for anything which I need to use throughout the day, set up quick, or dry. Typically, they fold/layer the pocket to allow it to expand when it is full. On the Circuit, the shock cord was just one more option used to lash something do. I tend to use it for clothing which I need to dry like an extra pair of socks. I'm hoping the Contrail is the same way. Dunno. Call and check.
I only have experience with a 2007 Catalyst, but I have packed that thing until the seams looked stressed and I could still use the front pocket. It doesn't stretch much at all, but it's bellowed so it does expand a lot.
Yes the Contrail will fit – easily.
