Looks like they are now offering a bivy with an eVent-like fabric top:

http://shop.bivysack.com/product.sc?categoryId=2&productId=30

info from an email from David:

I have some bivys that are 2 layer PFTE top silnylon bottom with the
identical breathability as
branded eVent. Figures from Richard Nisley.

Water Diffusion g/m2 24 hours
eVent 27.826
PFTE non branded 27.826

Air Permeability
eVent 7.14E-11
PFTE Non branded 7.14E-11

Can anybody speak to the quality of Oware bivys or have any detailed pictures they could show?…Unfortunately his website is sorely lacking in quality images.

Oware bivies are top notch. In fact, when BPL sold their own line of bivies, they were made by Oware.

I have the dixon double bivy which has a silnylon bathtub bottom and pertex quantum top (11) oz W/ sack and i love it. Plenty of room for my fiance, dog,me and gear-has kept our down bags and us dry and warm on many on many when we needed it to. We also have the Cattarp 2 (10.5) oz and plam on picking up a solo cuben fiber tarp next! Great design and craftsmanship, super functional gear at a good price. Dave is a pleasure to do buinesss with! When i had questions he was there to answer them. I would seriously consider Oware for any UL needs!

We’ve been very pleased with our inexpensive, lightweight Oware bivies. My wife and I have the 6.5 ounce singles with the drawcord netting. These do not have a cover over the netting and are meant for use under a tarp since the top isn’t waterproof — duh, it has a net! We bought them originally to use just in the summer for backpacking, but have ended up taking them along on our kayaking expeditions and I used mine throughout the winter here in Southeast Alaska. Best picture I have that is handy — also my favorite.

Thanks for the input guys. Now that I know quality is not an issue, I just have to determine whether or not the eVent fabric is worth the extra 4.6oz over a MLD soul bivy…

Chris, you're exactly right. I'm having difficulty deciding since I've never used a tarp/bivy combo before. I have a 5×8 tarp that I want to pair it with so it leads me to think that I should have a waterproof bivy…but I also have seen plenty of reports that say a momentum bivy is more than ok paired with a poncho tarp. Both bivys cost about the same so that is negligible but the utility vs weight issue has me wondering…

If we use breathability to make the decision, momentum wins right?

Breathability, yep.

As long as you're not trying to spend the night out sans tarp, I'd go with the momentum bivy.

If using with a tarp a bivy is usually for splash protection and "misting". Non-waterproof tops can handle most of this without an issue. However, you might be surprised by how breathable Event is…

If you want a bivy and can't decide, maybe buy the Euinox Ultralight for 60 bucks and use it to see if you need more water protection… I use one in all seasons.

Anyway, thanks for the Oware Event info- I wish he made one with a side zipper, if he did I'd sell my current models for one of his.

Just so you know, I recently spoke with Dave and he said that he would be willing to add a side zip, obviously for a little extra money. And thanks to the advice from this site I finally decided and ordered a 'high air perm' bivy from Dave. Now the agonizing wait till it arrives at my door…
