Hi – I just received the 2009 Jam 2. I ordered both sizes as I had to purchase online. I've loaded up both packs with about 15lbs and have been wearing them around the house.

I'm have a 19.5" torso length.

Here's my concern:
– I'm not sure which size to keep. The Large feels more comfy as I have a larger chest but the shoulder straps don't curve around my shoulders – if anything I'd say where the straps meet the pack is even or maybe even a few mm above my shoulder. But the straps are longer and don't tickle my armpit.

The Medium has more of a shoulder strap curve but the strap buckle comes close to my armpit.

Any advice on which size to keep and which to return? Thanks.

Aaron,

I have the 2008 Jam2 and have a torso length (according to Gregory measurements) of 18-19 inches.

I ended up getting the Large and in some ways, I don't think that it is long enough for me.

My issue is that in order to have the full weight of my pack (11.5 lbs and 15 to 17 lbs for an over-nighter) I have to loosen the shoulder straps quite a bit.

I end up with the top portion of the pack falling away from my shoulder blades by some 4 to 5 inches.

Looks odd, but feels right.

To answer your question, depends on if you like any weight on your shoulders?

I don't hence why my shoulder straps are so loose.

My advice is to take the Large…consider if you end up on a trip with a load of 20 to 25 lbs….how would that impact your comfort?

You might find that with a heavier load, the Large would be a better choice for you.

Hope that this helps.

21 inches torso and I use a medium size Jam2. I think it's 2007 model. I am not sure that torso size is all that important in this case. Weight is going to be on the shoulders anyway.

I too have a 19.5" torso and a 48" chest measurement and went with the Large. With any frameless pack you get some torso collapse and it seems to fit me very well. With the Medium, the strap attachment point was 3-4 inches below my shoulder line and it was uncomfortable.

I have a similar length torso and went with the large, based on the consensus around here….

The Large will produce a gap between the top of your shoulders and the pack "frame", but that can be mitigated.

Shoulder straps chaffing your under-arms in a M size cannot be mitigated and I imagine would become incredibly irritating.

Thank you everyone. I've been wearing the packs all evening with different weights and have decided to go with the large – nice to know that you understood where I was coming from and are mostly in agreement.

Now just need to get a new tent and bag and I'm all set – been away from backpacking for a couple of years but am looking forward to getting out to the Rockies this summer.
