So I am going to attempt to do the Tahoe-Yosemite Trail the last two weeks of July and have a question for any familiar with the weather of the area. The question is, is my sleep system adequate, and if not, what is the best/cheapest way to upgrade it.
Currently, I use an REI Kilo Flash women's down bag rated to 35 degrees. I've been comfortable to freezing in this bag with the use of a bivy and a 100-weight fleece top (tailored to fit for 5 oz total!), very lightweight wool/poly beany, and light silk baselayer.
Are temperatures on that section of the PCT likely to drop below freezing much that time of year? I understand it's at a lower elevation than the JMT (especially the southern section) and thus is probably warmer.
I'm considering these options:
1. Keep the system as is.
2. GoLite ultra 20 quilt (runs 180 or so)
3. JRB No Sniveler (about 240, but I could save weight by using it as insulation around camp and ditch the fleece?)
4. Just add Montbell UL parka to the mix and sleep in that. (Probably could get it for 140 or so)
Anyway, those are some options I've considered, as this trip is on a budget……
Thoughts appreciated.
