So to drop some weight i am looking at getting either the therm-a-rest z-lite or the ridge rest. wanted to get some opinions on which one is more comfortable and also if its possible to cut them down, i am planing on getting a regular then cutting it to the short length so the dog will have a pad too.

I have a ridgerest, but can't sleep on it. Many can just fine, but not me – I sleep best on air mattresses, and a NeoAir (while quite spendy) weighs the same as a ridgerest.
I do know this – the ridgerest can easily be cut it down no problem.
I have a Z lite and I must say that it has many notable attributes.
It is light, packable (amazingly for a CC foam pad), warm (for the weight), reasonably priced, and durable. Comfort however is not it's strong suit. I use it to layer under (or over) another pad when the temperature warrants.
I have used a ridgerest and it wasn't all that comfortable either. I have heard the Ridgerest Deluxe is better, but at a bit of a weight penalty.
Both really offer equal amounts of comfort in my opinion. I own both, purchasing the Z-Lite short for compactness. The Z-Lite has a dimpled design which seemed to offer a little more comfort for the first night or so over the Ridgerest, but those dimples quickly squished down some after nightly use and didn't rebound fully. The difference is minimal IMO. Either pad in size regular is suitable for trimming for you and your dog, the Z-Lite would require removing a panel or two, the Ridgerest is really cut to suit. I would think the decision comes down to whether you like rolling your pad in the morning or folding it up in a accordion fashion.
Gossamer Gear has several lightweight options.
