Firstly, the Jam 2 is already pretty spartan. Unlike your typical Gregory pack, there is not a whole lot to cut off.
Secondly, cutting off stuff means kissing goodbye to any chance of returning the pack for a full refund — and possibly a significantly reduced resale value as well. And with that in mind…
1. Straps — cut away any excess top and side compression straps.
2. Ice axe loops — get rid of those if you don't need them. Moi, I store my hiking poles in the pack's two side pockets, so ice axe loops are useless for me. YMMV.
3. Top material — I wouldn't but if you are desperate to cut weight and you are gutsy too — then maybe lob off any excess top material — and resew the cinch cord.
Take out the back pad, and hydration bladder compartment and back pad compartment.
Sternum strap too.
Thanks Benjamin and Nathan!
Great advice!
Personally, and I just got a Jam2, so I will be doing this in the near future, I would only shorten the straps and remove the pad/hydration sleeve. I think removing top material is a bit excessive and getting rid of the sternum strap messes too much with the stability of the pack. Perhaps also shorten the drawstring to the top closure, it's a bit long. You might also get rid of the compaktor clips, if you don't use them.
As a side note, I don't think mine came with ice-axe loops…
