What temp rating would I get with a 40dF down sleeping bag inside a 30dF montbell syn SS.

I stuffed my lighter bag in there and its not problem, with the stretchy Montbell outer bag.

I figure maybe good to about 10-15dF. Its lofty but hard to tell the actual thickness due to the bunching.

The combo is about 4#.

Heck the SS is so stretchy I even stuffed a 15 degree syn casper inside of the 30 degree SS and that worked too. The casper is too tight for me but together they are lofty.

Troy:

As mentioned on another post, I've used my 50F Montbell "Thermal Sheet" inside my non-stretch 30F Montbell No. 3 — and slept very comfortably down to 17F. I wore only long johns (top and bottom both weighed 8oz each).

I would say that my 50F bag gave my 30F bag a 15F boost. Your 40F should do even better — so I'd guesstimate a 20F boost.

I figured 10dF, but wanted to hear another opinion.

BTW, plenty of room.

Now I just need a roomier, lighter tent.

Thanks.

You're welcome. I think if you assume a 15F for starter and bring insulation jacket/pants just in case — you'll be fine.

The equivalent total loft is 3.35 inches which gives this combo bag a rating of exactly 0F or -18C.
